Gearbox Fluid - Front Drive Unit (1st Generation) (Drain and Refill)

This procedure is for vehicles built through April 24, 2019. For vehicles built after April 24, 2019, SeeGearbox Fluid - Front Drive Unit (2nd Generation) (Drain and Refill).

Drain

  1. Remove the filter housing. See Housing - Filter (Remove and Replace).
  2. Remove the front skid plate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  3. Release the acoustic cover from the front drive unit to gain access to the drain plug.

    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage component(s).
  4. Prepare a drain container and a small piece of cardboard or other flexible material to funnel drained fluid into the drain container.

    Note
    Ensure that the drain container is able to hold at least 2 liters of fluid.
  5. Use a 13 mm ratcheting wrench and the 2 hex bit adapters to remove the drain plug.

    Note
    Prevent the fluid from draining onto the chiller.
  6. Clean and reinstall the drain plug (torque 28 Nm).

Refill

  1. Reinstall the following components:
    • Acoustic cover
    • Front skid plate
    • Front aero shield
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Remove the fill plug.
  4. Fill the drive unit with the correct amount of proper fluid:

    CAUTION
    Use exactly the specified amount of gearbox fluid. Do not fill to the top of the filler opening.
  5. Clean and reinstall the fill plug (torque 28 Nm).
  6. Reinstall the components that were removed for access.
