Seal - Primary - Rear Door - LH (Adjust)

Inspect

  1. Remove any obstructions and open the rear LH door, and allow it to raise to the highest position.
  2. From the rear of the vehicle, sight along the top of the primary door seal and the applique seal, at the vehicle spine.

    Shift your viewpoint so as to visually overlap both door hinge arches into one.
  3. Compare the gap between the primary seal and the spine applique seal.
    • If the gap is clearly evident, adjustment is not necessary. Discontinue this procedure.
    • If the gap is indeterminate or non-existent, check the primary seal position.

  4. Insert the zero-end of a metal ruler under the spine applique seal, butt it against the body at the spine, and set the ruler resting on the primary seal.
  5. Measure the primary seal position along the spine. The flat outer edge of the seal should be approximately 42mm from the body along the length of the spine. If the edge is less than 42mm from the body, adjust the seal. See Adjust.

CAUTION
Care must be taken to avoid damage to paintwork and exterior trim.
  1. If the vehicle is equipped with plastic race track trim, gently separate the plastic trim from the vehicle spine.

    Do not remove the race track trim.
  2. Use a heat gun on the lowest setting to warm the primary seal at the spine, and soften the adhesive.

    CAUTION
    Make sure to keep the heat gun moving, to prevent overheating or burning any one spot on the vehicle.
  3. Carefully and incrementally separate the primary seal from the body at the spine.

    Note
    If the primary seal is damaged, replace the seal (refer to procedure).
  4. Use IPA wipes to clean the adhesive from under the primary seal, and allow at least 1 minute to dry.
  5. Reposition the upper sides of the primary seal so that the flat outer edge of the primary seal is 42mm from the body along the spine.

    Note
    Warm the primary seal and butyl compound to accommodate placement of the seal.
  6. Apply a uniform 3mm continuous bead of weather strip adhesive under the primary seal and allow the adhesive to become tacky before setting the seal.
  7. Use the ruler to position the primary seal so that the flat outer edge of the primary seal is 42mm from the body along the spine.
  8. Use a seam roller to apply even pressure and set the seal.

    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage component(s).
  9. Use IPA wipes to clean any visible adhesive from the race track trim.
  10. If the vehicle is equipped with plastic race track trim, gently attach the plastic trim to the vehicle spine.
  11. Use the ultrasonic leak detector to verify the adjusted primary seal's compliance.
