Tie Rod - Inner - LH (Remove and Replace)

Special tools required for this procedure:

Removal

  1. Remove the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace) .
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace) .
  3. Remove the underhood storage carpet. See Carpet - Underhood Storage (Remove and Install) .
  4. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install) .
  5. Release the fir tree clip that attaches the steering rack harness to the 4-way valve.
  6. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the 4-way valve bracket to the frame rail.
  7. Release the clip that attaches the coolant hose to the LH side of the frame rail.
  8. Move the 4-way valve towards the front of the vehicle for access.
  9. Release the fir tree clip that attaches the air suspension line to the LH subframe brace.
  10. Remove the upper bolt that attaches the LH front subframe brace.
  11. Remove the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install) .
  12. Remove the front aero shield. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  13. Loosen the jam nut that attaches the LH tie rod.
  14. Remove the lower bolt that attaches the LH front subframe brace to the body, and then remove the brace from the vehicle.
  15. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the tie rod end to the LH front knuckle.

    CAUTION
    Prevent ball joint damage by holding the ball joint pin with another wrench to counterforce the tie rod end nut.
  16. Loosen the LH outer tie rod, and then remove the outer tie rod from the steering rack.

    Note
    Record the number of turns it takes to remove the outer tie rod end from the steering rack to ease reinstallation.
  17. Remove the LH jam nut from the steering rack.
  18. Remove the clamp that attaches the outer side of the bellows to the LH inner tie rod using the combination slip joint pliers.
    Tip: Note the clamp orientation for installation later in this procedure.
  19. Remove the clamp that attaches the inner side of the bellows to the LH inner tie rod using a small flat head screwdriver.

    Note
    Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the clamp off the retaining tab.
  20. Remove the belows from the LH inner tie rod.
  21. Raise the vehicle fully using a 2-post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift .
  22. Inspect the LH steering gear output shaft. The grease on the steering gear rack must not be contaminated with dirt.
    • If there is no signs of grease contamination, continue to the next step.
    • If there is any signs of grease contamination, the ball nut bearing assembly is likely to be damage. Stop this procedure and replace the steering rack.
  23. Install the steering gear clamp tool, crawfoot socket, and the anti-rotation device tool on the LH inner tie rod.
  24. Loosen the LH inner tie rod while holding the inner gear to prevent it from rotating.

    CAUTION
    Failure to hold the inner gear might result in damage to the steering rack assembly.
  25. Remove the LH inner tie rod from the steering rack.

Installation

  1. Install the LH inner tie rod onto the steering rack by hand until the rod seats against the steering rack.
  2. Tighten the LH inner tie rod to the steering rack while holding the inner gear to prevent it from turning (torque 115 Nm).

    CAUTION
    Failure to hold the inner gear might result in internal steering rack damage.
  3. Remove the steering gear clamp and the anti rotation device tools from the LH inner tie rod.
  4. Install the inner band clip on the LH tie rod belows, but do not clamp the clip at this time.
  5. Use the following amount of Renolit JP 1619 grease (included with the inner tie rod service kit) to lubricate the bellows before installation:
    • At axial joint: 0.4 g
    • At rack housing (two locations): 1.0 g
  6. Install the belows into the LH inner tie rod.
  7. Lower the vehicle so that the tires are touching the ground.
  8. Attach the LH inner tie rod band clip by clamping the clip ear using the knipex ear clamp pliers.
  9. Hand-tighten the upper bolt that attaches the LH front subframe brace.

    Note
    The tighteneing of the bolt will be completed later in this procedure.
  10. Raise the vehicle fully.
  11. Install the lower bolt that attaches the LH front subframe brace to the body (torque 26 Nm).
  12. Install the front aero shield. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  13. Lower the vehicle partially to a comfortable working height.
  14. Install the outer hose clip on the LH inner tie rod bellows using the combination slip joint pliers.

    Note
    Install the clip in the original orientation.
  15. Install the LH jam nut onto the inner tie rod.
  16. Install the LH tie rod end, and then snug the jam nut.

    Use the recorded number of turns to put the tie rod end back on.
  17. Install a new nut that attaches the LH front tie rod end to the knuckle (torque 103 Nm).
  18. Install the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install) .
  19. Tighten the upper bolt that attaches the LH front subframe brace (torque 26 Nm).
  20. Secure the fir tree clip that attaches the air suspension line to the LH subframe brace.
  21. Move the 4-way valve back into its installed position.
  22. Install the clip that attaches the coolant hose to the LH side of the frame rail.
  23. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the 4-way valve bracket to the frame rail (torque 5 Nm).
  24. Install the fir tree clip that attaches the steering rack harness to the 4-way valve.
  25. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install) .
  26. Install the underhood storage carpet. See Carpet - Underhood Storage (Remove and Install) .
  27. Install the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace) .
  28. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace) .
  29. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
