Wheel Sensor - TPMS (Remove and Replace)

Correction Code 34040202

Warning
If the vehicle has air suspension, activate "Jack" mode on the touchscreen before raising and supporting the vehicle.
  • 2026-01-23: Updated the steps from loosening the upper bead of the tire to removing the tire.

Removal

  1. Remove the wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  2. Use a valve core tool to remove the valve core, and allow the tire to deflate.
    Warning
The tire will rapidly deflate. Wear proper PPE, such as safety glasses and gloves.
  3. Place the wheel on the tire machine, with the front of the wheel facing up.
  4. Position the center clamp in the wheel.
  5. Position the wheel cone on the center clamp and wheel, and then tighten the cone on the center clamp.
  6. Position the upper bead roller at the edge of the upper rim, and then positon the lower bead roller at the edge of the lower rim.
  7. Rotate the wheel to loosen the upper and lower tire beads. Lubricate the beads as the wheel rotates.
    CAUTION
The TPMS sensor is near the rim. Do not damage the TPMS sensor when loosening the upper bead.
  8. Position the tire machine arm at the edge of the rim, and then use a bead lever to hook the arm on the upper tire bead.
    CAUTION
Position the TPMS sensor ahead of the tire machine arm so that when the wheel rotates, the arm does not damage the TPMS sensor.
  9. Rotate the wheel to pull the upper tire bead above the rim. Lubricate the bead as the wheel rotates.
    CAUTION
Make sure the tire machine arm does not contact the TPMS sensor.
  10. Lift the tire and repeat the 2 previous steps on the lower tire bead, and then remove the tire from the wheel.
    CAUTION
Make sure the tire machine arm does not contact the TPMS sensor.
  11. Remove the nut that attaches the TPMS sensor to the wheel, and then remove the TPMS sensor.
    Tip
Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 11 mm deep socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench

Installation

  1. Remove the valve stem cap from the new TPMS sensor.
  2. Holding the sensor firmly against the inside of the wheel, tighten the valve retaining nut.
    • Baolong TPMS: Torque 5 Nm.
    • Continental TPMS: Torque 8 Nm.
    Note
Prior to installation, use an IPA wipe to thoroughly clean the inside and outside of the TPMS sensor mounting hole.
    Note
Verify that the TPMS seal is fully seated against the base; failure to do so could cause damage to the seal during installation.
    Note
Before the full torque is reached, an internal break off ring will "give". Continue to tighten the nut until the full torque is achieved.
  3. Lubricate both tire beads.
  4. Inspect both sides of the tire sidewall to determine proper tire orientation in relation to the wheel.
    Note
Look for an arrow that indicates rotation direction, or words such as "outside" or "side facing outwards".
  5. Position the tire on top of the wheel, and then move the tire machine arm into position to install the lower tire bead.
  6. Rotate the wheel to install the lower tire bead.
    CAUTION
Make sure the tire machine arm does not contact the TPMS sensor.
  7. Move the tire machine arm into position to install the upper tire bead.
  8. Rotate the wheel to install the upper tire bead.
    CAUTION
Make sure the tire machine arm does not contact the TPMS sensor.
  9. Carefully inflate the tire to specification. The tire beads will seat against the wheel.
    Warning
Do not exceed the air pressure indicated on the tire sidewall.
    CAUTION
Wear proper PPE, such as safety glasses and gloves.
  10. Use a valve core tool to install the valve core.
  11. Remove the cone and center clamp from the wheel, and then remove the wheel from the tire machine.
  12. Balance the wheel and tire. See Tire - Front - LH (Balance).
  13. Install the wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  14. Perform the wheel sensor TPMS ID learn procedure.
  15. Drive the vehicle for approximately one minute at a speed exceeding 20 mph (32 km/h) until the ID learn process is completed.
    Note
Make sure that the vehicle has no TPMS alerts before you return the vehicle to the customer.
