Heater - PTC (RHD) (RWD) (Remove and Replace)

Only technicians who have been trained in High Voltage Awareness and have completed all required certification courses (if applicable) are permitted to perform this procedure. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and insulating HV gloves with a minimum rating of class 0 (1000V) must be worn any time a high voltage cable is handled. Refer to Tech Note TN-15-92-003, "High Voltage Awareness Care Points" for additional safety information.

If the 12V power supply is disconnected, do not attempt to open any doors with door glass in closed position. Failure to follow this instruction could result in door glass shatter.

Note
Before disconnecting the 12V power supply, ensure that the driver’s door window is fully open. Failure to follow this instruction could result in vehicle lockout.

Removal

  1. Remove the glove box (refer to procedure).
  2. Remove the LH footwell (refer to procedure).
  3. Remove the 10 mm bolts (x4) (torque 7 Nm) and the T20 screws (x2) (torque 2 Nm) that attach the passenger knee airbag bracket to the cross car beam.
  4. Remove the passenger knee airbag bracket.
  5. Open the hood, and then remove the LH, RH and rear underhood aprons.
  6. Remove the knobs (x4) that attach the LH and RH extended underhood storage side trims, and then remove the side trims.
  7. Remove the underhood storage extension box (refer to procedure).
  8. Remove the cowl screen panel (refer to procedure).
  9. Perform the vehicle HV disablement procedure (refer to procedure).
  10. Release the red locking tab and disconnect the HV connector of the PTC heater from the front junction box.
  11. Push the PTC heater HV harness rubber grommet through the bulkhead into the cabin of the vehicle.
  12. Release the PTC HV harness clip from the battery coolant heater bracket.
  13. Pull the PTC harness fully through the bulkhead.
  14. Disconnect the sensor from the RH lower air duct on the HVAC assembly.
  15. Remove the screws (x2) that attach the RH lower air duct to the HVAC assembly (torque 1 Nm).
  16. Remove the RH lower air duct from the HVAC assembly.

    Lower the left slide of the duct and slide it out to the left to release it from the HVAC assembly.
  17. Remove the screws (x3) that attach the PTC heater to the HVAC assembly (torque 1 Nm).
  18. Disconnect the PTC heater Logic connector.

    Partially slide the PTC heater out of the HVAC assembly to gain access to release the connector tab.
  19. Remove the PTC heater from the HVAC assembly.

    Slide the PTC heater out to the left and then remove it remove from the vehicle.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Note
Later revisions of the PTC heater come with a white KET connector. This connector is fully backwards compatible and does not need to be replaced by the brown KET connector.

Note
For vehicles originally equipped with a Gen 2 or earlier PTC heater, a low voltage jumper harness is required for the body harness connection to reach the logic connector on the PTC heater.
  1. Clean the interior of HVAC casing prior to assembly.
  2. Reinstall the latest vehicle firmware, or update the firmware if not the latest. See Firmware Reinstall - Touchscreen or Firmware Update.
