Intermediate Shaft - Steering Column - Lower (Dual Motor) (2nd Generation) (Remove and Replace)

Note
This procedure is for vehicles built after April 10, 2016. For vehicles built through April 10, 2016, see Intermediate Shaft - Steering Column - Lower (Dual Motor) (1st Generation) (Remove and Replace).

Removal

  1. If equipped with air suspension, place the vehicle in Jack Mode. See Jack Mode Activation .
  2. Remove the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace) .
  3. Remove the front underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  4. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace) .
  5. Remove the HEPA filter outlet duct. See Duct - HEPA Filter - Outlet (Remove and Replace) .
  6. Disconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
  7. Locate the bolt and nut that attach the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.

    Note
    Turn the steering wheel until the bolt and nut are accessible.
  8. From the top of the vehicle, remove and discard the nut and bolt that attach the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft.

    Loosen the nut, and then remove the fasteners by hand.

    Note
    The nut is welded onto upper intermediate shafts on vehicles built July 2017 onwards. On vehicles built before this date, check the upper intermediate shaft and order a new nut if it is not welded to the shaft.
  9. Install the steering wheel holder on the steering wheel.

    Note
    The steering wheel holder prevents damage to the clockspring during the removal of the lower intermediate steering column shaft.
  10. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift .
  11. Remove the front bash plate extrusion. See Bash Plate - Front - Extrusion (Remove and Replace) .
  12. Remove and discard the bolts (x4) that attach the HV battery to the front subframe.
  13. Remove the front aero shield. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  14. Remove the front skidplate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  15. Locate the lower bolt that attaches the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack.

    Note
    The steering wheel might need to be turned for access to the lower bolt.
  16. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack.
  17. Slide the lower portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft up and off the steering rack input shaft.
  18. Slide down the upper portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft to separate it from the upper intermediate shaft, and then remove the lower steering column intermediate shaft from the vehicle.

Installation

  1. Using a paintbrush, apply Krytox lubricant on all of the intermediate shaft u-joint seals and crevices.
  2. Position the lower steering column intermediate shaft for installation on the vehicle.
  3. Slide the upper portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft up and onto the upper steering column intermediate shaft.
  4. Slide the lower portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft down and onto the steering rack input shaft.
  5. Install the new bolt that attaches the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack.
    • Model S vehicles built before April 10, 2016: (torque 49 Nm)
    • Model S vehicles built after April 10, 2016: (torque 30 Nm)
  6. Install the front skidplate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  7. Install the front aero shield. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  8. Install the new bolts (x4) that attach the HV battery to the front subframe (torque 30 Nm).
  9. Install the front bash plate extrusion. See Bash Plate - Front - Extrusion (Remove and Replace) .
  10. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift .
  11. Install the new nut and bolt that attach the lower intermediate steering column shaft to the upper intermediate shaft (torque 49 Nm).

    Note
    The nut is welded onto upper intermediate shafts on vehicles built July 2017 onwards. On vehicles built before this date, check the upper intermediate shaft and order a new nut if it is not welded to the shaft.

  12. Remove the steering wheel holder from the vehicle.
  13. Reconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
  14. Install the HEPA filter outlet duct. See Duct - HEPA Filter - Outlet (Remove and Replace) .
  15. Install the front underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  16. Install the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace) .
  17. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace) .
  18. If equipped with air suspension, deactivate Jack Mode. See Jack Mode Activation .
  19. With the vehicle in Park, tires touching the ground, and brake pedal depressed, perform 4 lock-to-lock steering inputs, noting any friction, grinding, or other abnormal sensations from the steering wheel. Repeat this test with the brake pedal released.
  20. Raise the vehicle slightly so that the tires are off the ground.
  21. With the vehicle in Park and the brake pedal released, perform 4 lock-to-lock steering inputs, noting any friction, grinding, or other abnormal sensations from the steering wheel. If any concerns were detected while performing the previous steering sweeps, perform further diagnosis to identify the cause for these concerns.
