Hub - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace)

Correction Code 31030702

  • 2023-04-12: Added steps to remove wheel, push in axle, and note to use a short socket to remove the hub mounting bolts.

Warning
If the vehicle has air suspension, activate "Jack" mode on the touchscreen before raising and supporting the vehicle.

Removal

  1. Position the vehicle in preparation for raising it, but keep the vehicle at ground level at this time.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the LH rear wheel.
  3. Remove the LH rear wheel center cap.
  4. Remove the LH rear axle nut (torque 245 Nm).
  5. Remove the wedge-lock washer from the LH rear axle.
  6. Put the vehicle in "Tow" mode.
  7. Remove the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  8. Remove the LH rear wheel arch liner. See Wheel Arch Liner - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove the bolts (x2) that secure the brake caliper to the knuckle (torque 120 Nm).
  10. Separate the LH rear caliper from the LH rear knuckle and use the S-hook to support it.

    CAUTION
    To avoid damage to the brake line, the brake caliper must be supported at all times.
  11. Remove the screw that secures the LH rear wheel speed sensor to the LH rear knuckle (torque 8 Nm).
  12. Release the wheel speed sensor from the knuckle and tie it aside.

    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage component(s).
  13. Remove the LH parking brake caliper (refer to procedure).
  14. Use 2 lug nuts and 2 hydraulic hub puller washers to install the hydraulic hub puller tool onto the LH rear wheel studs.

    CAUTION
    Install the washer and nut sets on opposite sides of the LH rear wheel hub.
  15. Hold the hub in position, and turn the hydraulic hub puller tool handle clockwise to loosen and push the LH rear drive unit halfshaft in from the LH rear hub assembly.

    CAUTION
    The hydraulic hub puller tool is used to loosen the splines of the halfshaft from the hub, not to completely remove the halfshaft. If the halfshaft stops moving in respect to the hub, stop, and turn the tool handle counter-clockwise for two turns.
  16. Remove the hydraulic hub puller tool from the LH rear wheel studs.
  17. Remove the screw that secures the brake rotor to the hub, then remove the brake rotor (torque 17 Nm).
  18. Remove the bolts (x4) that secure the hub to the knuckle (torque 90 Nm).

    Note
    Use an extension with a short socket so that the socket wall does not interfere with the halfshaft.

  19. Remove the halfshaft from the hub, and remove the hub from the knuckle. Place the hub on a non-magnetic surface.

    CAUTION
    A magnetic field from a pick-up tool or magnetic parts tray could permanently damage the magnetic pattern on the hub/bearing tone ring.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:
  • Clean the mating faces of the hub and disc.
  • Use the magnetic field viewing card to ensure that the magnetic field on the tone ring is not damaged.
  • After connecting the electric parking brake caliper harness, wrap the connector seam with electrical tape to prevent dirt ingress.
  • Pump the brake pedal at least 5 times to seat the pads against the brake rotors.

    Always check that the brake pads are seated correctly before driving the vehicle.
  • Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
