Carrier - Bumper - Front (Remove and Replace)

Warning
If the vehicle has air suspension, activate "Jack" mode on the touchscreen before raising and supporting the vehicle.

Removal

  1. Recover the A/C refrigerant from the vehicle. See A/C Refrigerant Recovery and Recharge (Remove and Replace).
  2. Raise and support the vehicle on a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  3. Remove the radiator. See Radiator (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the center active louver. See Active Louver - Center (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove the LH and RH headlight assemblies. See Headlight Assembly - LH (Remove and Replace).
  6. Remove the LH and RH horns. See Horn - 1st Generation (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the front antenna bumper carrier. See LF Antenna - Bumper Carrier (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the LH and RH front impact sensors. See Sensor - Impact - Front - LH (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  10. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the front bumper carrier to the body (torque 4 Nm).

    Note
    LH bolt shown for clarity.
  11. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH stay bar to the carrier (torque 11 Nm).
  12. Remove the nut that attaches the air conditioning pipe to the LH condenser (torque 8 Nm).
  13. Disconnect the pipe and tie aside.

    CAUTION
    Plug pipe connections to prevent ingress of moisture or dirt.

    Remove and discard O-rings.

    Lubricate new O-rings with clean refrigerant oil.
  14. Remove the nut that attaches the inboard air conditioning link pipe (torque 15 Nm).
  15. Disconnect the pipe from the condenser and tie aside.
  16. Disconnect the condenser fan motor electrical connector.
  17. Remove the screws (x4) that attach the condenser mounting clamps (torque 3 Nm).
  18. Release the condenser from the lower mounting and collect the clamps.
  19. Release the condenser assembly from the upper mounting and remove from the vehicle.
  20. Repeat the previous 9 steps and remove the RH condenser.
  21. Remove the following hardware:
    1. The bolt that attaches the air suspension compressor bracket to the carrier (red arrow) (torque 6 Nm).
    2. The bolts (x2) that attach the vacuum pump mounting bracket to the front bumper carrier (blue arrows) (torque 6 Nm).
  22. Remove the following hardware:
    1. The clip that attaches the air suspension compressor pump valve to the carrier (blue arrow). Tie the valve aside.
    2. The bolt that attaches the inboard air conditioning link pipe to the carrier (yellow arrow) (torque 11 Nm). Remove the pipe.
    3. The clips (x4) that attach the coolant hose to the carrier (green arrows).
    4. The harness clips (x8) that attach the harness to the carrier (red arrows).
  23. Remove the following hardware:
    1. The LH and RH ankle catcher end screws (x2) (blue arrows) (torque 11 Nm).
    2. The bolts (x6) that attach the ankle catcher to the crash structure (red arrows) (torque 11 Nm).
  24. Remove the ankle catcher assembly. See Ankle Catcher Assembly (Remove and Replace).
  25. Remove the front bumper carrier.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

New front bumper carrier with part number 1061950-98-E or later must be modified before installation:

  1. Locate the front mounting holes for the front trunk assembly on the carrier, and then enlarge the mounting holes by drilling 9mm holes.
  2. Using a rivnut setting tool, install a rivnut into the RH front hole on the carrier. Repeat this step on the LH front hole.

    Make sure that each rivnut is fully flushed and secured onto the carrier.
