Locking Devices
General
Always replace locking devices with ones of the same design.
Fastener Symmetry
Nuts and washers might at first appear to be symmetrical, but upon closer inspection, a difference in "sides" can be determined. The nut or washer will have a flat side called the hard edge, and a rounded side called the crown edge. When installing the fasteners, the hard edge should be toward the mounting surface, and the crown edge away from the mounting surface. This is also true when combining a washer and nut together. The washer hard edge is against the mounting surface, the nut hard edge is contacting the washer crown edge.
Corroded or damaged fasteners
Always inspect reusable fasteners prior to reinstalling them in a vehicle. Discard and replace fasteners that show signs of damage or accelerated corrosion.
Locking tabs and washers
Always inspect locking tabs and washers. Do not reuse if damaged.
Pipe and hose unions
To prevent rotational damage to components, use two wrenches when loosening and tightening unions.
Nyloc and torque nuts
Discard and replace Nyloc and torque nuts after removal.
Encapsulated and Patch bolts
Discard and replace encapsulated and patch bolts after removal.
Locking compounds
Approved locking agents must be applied to some threads on reassembly where indicated in the procedure.
Applying LOCTITE®
Leaving the first thread clean, a bead of LOCTITE® should be applied to the complete diameter of the bolts leading threads for the first 10mm.
