Actuator - Headrest - Driver's (Premium Seats) (Remove and Replace)

This procedure is only valid for vehicles with Tesla Premium Seats.

Removal

  1. Remove the driver's headrest trim (refer to procedure).
  2. Disconnect 12V power (refer to procedure).
  3. Carefully cut the cable tie that secures the headrest motor harness to the LH seat frame.

    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage component(s).
  4. Disconnect the headrest motor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the screws (x2) that secure the headrest trim to the seat (torque 1.5 Nm).

    The following image shows the headrest trim still installed.
  6. Remove the side cover from the seat backing.
  7. On each side of the seat, remove the fastener cover.
  8. On each side of the seat, remove the fastener that secures the backing (torque 1.5 Nm).
  9. Remove the screws (x6) that secure the headrest frame plate to the seat frame (torque 1.5 Nm).

    CAUTION
    Take care not to overtorque the screws.
  10. Use a trim tool to release the clips (x6) that secure the back rest trim and foam to the seat frame.

    Note
    The back rest trim and foam hang forward, away from the working area.
  11. Release the clips (x3) that secure the headrest frame plate to the seat frame. Remove the headrest frame plate.
  12. Remove and discard the screws (x4) that secure the headrest actuator assembly to the seat frame (torque 8 Nm).
  13. Remove the headrest actuator assembly from the vehicle and place it on a soft, clean surface.
  14. Release the headrest motor plate from the headrest actuator assembly.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Replace any broken clips.

Replace all patchbolt(s).
  1. Transfer the headrest motor plate to the new headrest motor assembly.
  2. Use the locator post to align the headrest assembly motor.
  3. Ensure that the headrest motor harness is routed in front of the seat frame.

  4. Use a new cable tie to secure the headrest motor harness to the seat frame. Remove any excess tie.
  5. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  6. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
  7. To disable seat install mode, in Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "Seat-Install" into the search field, click PROC_BCREAR_X_SEAT-INSTALL-MODE-OFFSearch for routine in ToolboxSeat Install Mode Off (Monopost Seats), click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  8. To calibrate the driver seat, in Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "PROC_MSMD" into the search field, click PROC_MSMD_VCSEATD-FRONT-DRV_CALIBRATE-MEMORY-SEATSearch for routine in ToolboxCalibrates the Driver Seat on Legacy SXLow Voltage / Seats - Calibrate Driver Seat, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  9. To calibrate the front passenger seat, in Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "PROC_MSMP" into the search field, click PROC_MSMP_VCSEATP-FRONT-PAS_CALIBRATE-MEMORY-SEATSearch for routine in ToolboxCalibrates the Passenger Seat on Legacy SXLow Voltage / Seats - Calibrate Passenger Seat, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  10. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
