Module - Passive Safety Restraint - PSRCM (Remove and Replace)

Make sure 12V power has been disconnected for at least 2 minutes before disconnecting the electrical harness from Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) components, such as modules, sensors, airbags, etc. Failure to do so can result in unintended safety system behaviors. Warning
While performing any Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) related repairs, it is important to disconnect 12 volt power. If the vehicle’s 12 volt power is NOT disconnected and the Passive Safety Restraint Module is removed or disturbed, this can result in the deployment of the vehicle’s airbags.

If the 12V power supply is disconnected, do not attempt to open any doors with door glass in closed position. Failure to follow this instruction could result in door glass shatter.

Note
Before disconnecting the 12V power supply, ensure that the driver’s door window is fully open. Failure to follow this instruction could result in vehicle lockout.

Note
In the event of an airbag or seat belt tensioner deployment, certain airbag and seat belt components must be replaced, and other components must be inspected for damage. Refer to SRS Inspection and Component Replacement for a specific list of items that must be inspected and replaced.

Removal

  1. Move the LH front seat backward.
  2. Fully raise the steering column and move it outwards from the instrument panel.
  3. Remove the LH center console closeout extension See Assembly - Closeout Extension - LH - Center Console (Remove and Replace) .
  4. Move the RH front seat backwards.
  5. Remove the RH center console closeout extension.
  6. Remove the bolts (x3) that secure the air suspension ECU mounting bracket to the body (torque metal bracket 8 Nm; plastic bracket 2 Nm), and then lift the bracket up for access.

    Make sure LV is disconnected before continuing to the next step.

    Note
    The horizontal bolt might be obscured by an acoustic pad. If it is, carefully move the acoustic pad aside for access. Pull the ECU mounting bracket towards the rear of the vehicle to release the tab from the bulkhead. Do not remove the ECU.
  7. Disconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
  8. RHD vehicles only: remove the central body controller - BCM (RHD) See Module - Body Controller - BCM (1st Generation) (RHD) (Remove and Replace) .
  9. Disconnect the passive safety restraint control module (PSRCM) connectors (x2), and then move the connectors aside.

    Note
    Disconnect the rearward connector first, and then disconnect the remaining connector. To disconnect, press on the lock tab while pivoting the catch release until an audible click is heard.
  10. Remove the bolt that attaches the connector side of the PSRCM to the body (torque 10 Nm).
  11. Remove the remaining bolts (x2) that attach the PSRCM to the body.
  12. Remove the PSRCM from the vehicle.

Installation

  1. Position the PSRCM into the vehicle for installation.
  2. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the PSRCM to the body (torque 10 Nm).
  3. Install the bolt that attaches the connector side of the PSRCM to the body (torque 10 Nm).
  4. Connect the forward PSRCM connector. Place the connector into position on the RCM and pivot the catch towards the front of the vehicle until the catch is parallel to the RCM.

    Note
    An audible click indicates that the connector lock is engaged. Verify connection by performing a push-pull-push test.
  5. Similarly, connect the rearward RCM connector, and then perform a push-pull-push test.
  6. RHD vehicles only: Reinstall the central body controller - BCM (RHD) See Module - Body Controller - BCM (1st Generation) (RHD) (Remove and Replace) .
  7. Reinstall the active suspension ECU See Module - Air Suspension - ECU (Remove and Install) .
  8. Reconnect 12v power See Disconnect 12V Power .
  9. Reinstall the latest vehicle firmware, or update the firmware if not the latest. See Firmware Reinstall - Touchscreen or Firmware Update.
  10. For Model S vehicles built before approximately February 19, 2019: Use the Toolbox 2 Application Airbag Program panel to update the PSRCM module.

    Note
    Use a PEAK-CAN dongle (PN: 1016990-00-A) and a CAN breakout harness (PN: 1013716-00-A) to connect the laptop to the vehicle CAN BUS.
    1. Make sure the drivers for the CAN-Dongle are up to date. If necessary, download the drivers from the Peak website.
    2. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
    3. Connect Toolbox 2 as normal to the vehicle until a green dot appears in the bottom left corner of the screen.
    4. Connect the PCAN dongle to the laptop.
    5. Connect the CAN breakout harness to the vehicle.

      Note
      The connector may be white on some vehicles.
    6. Connect the "chassis" connector on the CAN breakout harness to the PCAN dongle.
    7. There should now be a grey button next to the green button in the bottom left corner of the screen.
    8. Click the grey button, and then click Chassis in the drop-down menu.

      The grey button should turn green.
  11. For Model S vehicles built after approximately February 19, 2019: Perform the following.
    1. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
    2. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle.
    3. In Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "RCM" into the search field, select PROC_RCM_X_SERVICE-TASKSvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode Plus:
      • Safety & Restraints ➜ Airbags ➜ Post Replacement Tasks
      • Safety & Restraints ➜ Safety Testing ➜ RCM Service Tasks
      • Safety & Restraints ➜ Seats ➜ Post Replacement Tasks
      • Safety & Restraints ➜ Airbags ➜ Post Replacement Tasks
      • Safety & Restraints ➜ Safety Testing ➜ RCM Service Tasks
      , click Run, and allow the routine to complete.

      Note
      This routine is only available if the vehicle runs firmware version 2024.8 or later.
    4. Disconnect Toolbox and remove the laptop from the vehicle.
    5. Exit Service Mode.
  12. Ensure that the airbag safety indicator light displays on the instrument cluster during vehicle startup and then turns off after 6 seconds.
