Oil Pump - Rear Drive Unit (Remove and Replace)

Raise and support vehicle
NoteSet air suspension to "Jack Mode" if equipped
- Open LH front door and lower window
-
On the touchscreen, touch Controls (vehicle
icon), and then touch the Software tab to
display the vehicle firmware version.
NoteMake sure the vehicle Firmware is 2019.40.2 or later, update the firmware if not. Update the vehicle firmware. See Firmware Update.

Open hood
-
Remove rear underhood apron
Note8x clips
-
Remove RH underhood apron
Note9x clips
-
Remove LH underhood apron
Note9x clips
-
Release drainage hoses from HEPA filter
inlet duct
Note2x hoses
-
Remove clips securing HEPA filter inlet
duct to cowl panel
Note3x push clips
-
Remove HEPA filter inlet duct
Note2x clips on HEPA filter
-
Remove HEPA filter outlet duct from
vehicle
NoteLift up, pull towards front of vehicle, then rotate clockwise
-
Power down vehicle using MCU
NoteControls > E-brake & Power Off > Power off
-
Disconnect 12V negative terminal and
First Responder Loop
Note1x nut, 10mm, 5 Nm, 1x connector, Wait at least 2 minutes before disconnecting modules or HV components
-
Raise vehicle fully and lower lift onto
locks
NoteSet vehicle to comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side

Partially remove front aero shield
Note12x bolts, 10mm, 4Nm, 2x push clips
-
Disconnect the front drive unit oil pump
connector
Note1x electrical connector, Access through subframe between steering rack and right axle
-
Remove clips securing LH shear plate to
wheel fairing
Note2x push clips
-
Remove LH shear plate
Note1x nyloc nut, 15mm, 35 Nm, 3x screws, T25, 6 Nm, 1x bolt, 10mm, 4 Nm, Discard nyloc nut after removal

Remove clips securing RH shear plate to
wheel fairing
Note2x push clips
-
Remove RH shear plate
Note1x nyloc nut, 15mm, 35 Nm, 3x screws, T25, 6 Nm, 1x bolt, 10mm, 4 Nm, Discard nyloc nut after removal

Remove bolts securing mid aero shield to
vehicle
Note7x bolts, 10mm, 4 Nm
-
Remove clips securing mid aero shield to
vehicle
Note7x push clips
-
Remove mid aero shield from
vehicle
-
Disconnect the rear drive unit oil pump
connector
Note1x electrical connector,Rear oil pump location on top of drive unit at left side, Release connector lock, depress and gently pull
-
Position the oil drain container under
RDU drain plug
-
Remove rear drive unit fill plug
Note1x hex bolt, 8mm, 28 Nm, Remove fill plug first and observe, no fluid should come out otherwise system over filled
-
Remove rear drive unit drain plug
Note1x hex bolt, 8mm, 28 Nm, Remove drain plug slowly, drain fluid into oil drain container

Install oil filter socket
NoteCarefully install oil filter socket until fully seated on to oil filter to ensure proper grip and clearance
-
Install flexible funnel
NoteShape flexible funnel to keep fluid from spilling laterally, Position flexible funnel underneath oil filter toward oil drain container

Remove oil filter
NoteTesla recommends that the oil filter is replaced with a new one upon removal. Any oil filter with visible corrosion or leaks must be replaced.NoteUse 21mm ratcheting wrench to loosen oil filter, spin counterclockwise, 3 Nm and 135 degrees, Allow oil to drain, be mindful of coolant hoses, once loose remove wrench, unscrew oil filter by hand, allow fluid to flow down flexible funnel into oil drain container, Discard after removal

Re-position flexible funnel
NoteMove the flexible funnel to the right underneath the oil pump, move oil drain container to match the funnel output

Remove oil pump bolts
Note2x bolts, M8, 5 Nm + 20 degrees
-
Remove oil pump
NoteCarefully insert plastic wedge between oil pump and lower housing bracket, in small increments work the wedge between lower housing bracket and oil pump until green o-ring is visible, remove oil pump by hand toward front of vehicle between coolant hoses, residual oil will drain from housing, allow oil to drain

Inspect seals and o-rings
NoteInspect o-rings on removed parts, 3 o-rings on pump, one o-ring on each drain and fill plug, if missing o-ring on pump ensure it is not left in housing, if damaged o-ring on plugs replace affected plug, Check seal on oil filter, if missing check if still on housing and remove before install

Remove flexible funnel

Install oil pump to RDU
NoteLubricate all o-rings on new oil pump, carefully position oil pump between coolant hoses, install pump

Install the fasteners securing the oil
pump to the RDU
Note2x bolts, M8, 5 Nm + 20 degrees

Connect the rear drive unit oil pump
electrical connector
Note1x electrical connector,Rear oil pump location on top of drive unit at left side, Engage connector lock, install and gently pull to test secure connection

Install new oil filter to RDU
NoteTesla recommends that the oil filter is replaced with a new one upon removal. Any oil filter with visible corrosion or leaks must be replaced.NoteSpin clockwise, 3 Nm and 135 degrees, Lubricate seal prior to installation

Install drain plug to small RDU
Note1x hex bolt, 8mm, 28 Nm, Lubricate o-ring on fill plug, start by hand, Do not over torque due to risk of cracking case

Fill small RDU gearbox
NoteEnsure SK lubricant 212-B is used, Fill 2.4 qts or 2300 mL through fill plug hole, Pump slowly, If the RDU is filled too quickly the fluid will spill out before the correct amount is added

Install small RDU fill plug
Note1x hex bolt, 8mm, 28 Nm, Lubricate o-ring on fill plug, start by hand, Do not over torque due to risk of cracking case

Remove oil drain container
NotePosition the oil drain container clear of the vehicle hoist, Clean any residual oil from drive unit and subframe
-
Lower vehicle until tires are touching
the ground
NoteRaise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered
-
Reconnect First Responder Loop and 12V
negative terminal
Note1x nut, 10mm, 5 Nm, 1x connector
- Enable Service Mode. See Service Mode.

If not already connected, connect a
laptop with Toolbox 3.0 to the vehicle.
NoteOpen Toolbox 3 website and establish connection to the vehicle. Select connection status icon at top right corner, and select Connect Locally (icon will turn green when vehicle is connected)
- Type PROC_PMS_REAR_WRITE-OPC-TYPESearch for routine in ToolboxConfigure Rear Oil Pump LIN Node ID in the search field, Make sure "Actions/Autodiag" is selected if not already
- Select "Configure Rear Oil Pump LIN Node ID" and then "Run" once popup opens

Raise vehicle fully and lower lift onto
locks

Connect front drive unit oil pump

Install push clips and tighten bolts

Position mid aero shield and install
bolts securing mid aero shield to vehicle
Note7x bolts, 10mm, 4 Nm

Install clips securing mid aero shield
to vehicle
Note7x push clips
-
Install screws, bolt, and nut securing
RH shear plate to vehicle
Note3x screws, T25, 6 Nm, 1x bolt, 10mm, 4 Nm, 1x nut, 15mm, 35 Nm, Install new nut

Install clips securing RH shear plate to
wheel fairing
Note2x push clips
-
Install screws, bolt, and nut securing
LH shear plate to vehicle
Note3x screws, T25, 6 Nm, 1x bolt, 10mm, 4 Nm, 1x nut, 15mm, 35 Nm, Install new nut

Install clips securing LH shear plate to
wheel fairing
Note2x push clips
-
Lower vehicle fully
NoteRaise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered
-
Connect 12V charger
NoteThe vehicle 12V system must remain supported until vehicle firmware is completed
- Reinstall the vehicle firmware. See Firmware Reinstall - Touchscreen.

Disconnect Toolbox from vehicle and
install cubby under the MCU
Note1x connector, 2x clips

Disconnect 12V charger from
vehicle
NoteAfter FW update has completed the vehicle should no longer need auxiliary 12V support

Install HEPA filter outlet duct
-
Install HEPA filter inlet duct
Note2x tabs, One on each side

Install clips securing HEPA filter inlet
duct to cowl panel
Note3x push clips

Secure drainage hoses to HEPA filter
inlet duct
Note2x hoses

Install LH underhood apron
Note9x clips
-
Install RH underhood apron
Note9x clips

Install rear underhood apron
Note8x clips

Close hood
NotePress firmly in green highlighted areas (see image), Damage may result from pressure elsewhere on hood

Remove vehicle from lift
NoteLower rack arms fully and remove them from under vehicle, Remove air suspension from "Jack Mode"
- Raise LH front window and close door
