Frame Assembly - Cushion - Driver Seat (Remove and Replace)
Correction code 13012202
- 2024-12-10: Added mini-tilt motor configuration information.
- 2023-03-23: Added seat track position sensor remove/install steps.

- Open both doors on LH side

Open hood
NoteUsing MCU touchscreen > Controls > Frunk Trunk
-
Remove rear underhood apron
Note8x clips
-
Remove RH underhood apron
Note9x clips
-
Remove LH underhood apron
Note9x clips
-
Release drainage hoses from HEPA filter inlet duct
Note2x hoses
-
Remove clips securing HEPA filter inlet duct to cowl panel
Note3x push clips
-
Remove HEPA filter inlet duct
Note2x clips on HEPA filter
-
Remove HEPA filter outlet duct from vehicle
NoteLift up, pull towards front of vehicle, then rotate clockwise
- Move LH front seat backward
-
Remove LH front seat front fasteners
Note2x patch bolts, T47P, 33.5 Nm, Discard after removal
-
Move LH front seat forward
-
Remove LH front seat rear fasteners
Note2x patch bolts, T47P, 33.5 Nm, Discard after removal
-
Adjust position of LH front seat for easy removal
NoteMove seat to middle of track at most upright position with seat fully up off floor
-
Power down vehicle using MCU
NoteControls > Safety&Security > Power Off > ''POWER OFF''

Disconnect 12V negative terminal and First Responder Loop
Note1x nut, 10mm, 5 Nm, 1x connector, Wait at least 2 minutes before disconnecting modules or HV components

Disconnect LH front seat harness
Note1x connector

Remove LH front seat from vehicle
NoteRecommend assistance, Use caution to not damage other components
-
Remove screw securing outer side cover from seat
Note1x screw, T20, 4 Nm, Ensure the front of the seat is high enough to access the T20 screw
-
Release outer side cover clip from seat, but do not remove
Note1x clip, Do not fully remove, possible damage to the trim/switch pack/harness
-
Disconnect seat switch connector
Note1x connector
-
Slide outer cover rearward to release clip from frame and lift up
Note1x clip
-
Release inboard side shield clip from seat, but do not fully remove
Note1x clip, 1x hook, Ensure hook is released from seat bottom frame, Do not fully remove
-
Route seat belt buckle out of inboard side shield
-
Remove inboard side shield
NoteSlide inboard side shield rearward to release tab from frame and lift up
-
Place the front seat in a position to gain access to the bottom of the seat
NoteProtect seat cushion from damage
-
Release toe kick straps from both sides of interior seat base
Note2x hook clips

Release toe kick j-hooks from seat mat spring
Note2x J-hooks

Disconnect the seat heater connector
Note1x connector, 1x clip, Remove connector from spring mat clip
-
If equipped, disconnect the seat track position sensor.
Note1x connector.

If equipped, remove the screw that attaches the seat track position sensor to the seat track assembly, and then remove the sensor from the seat track assembly.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- T20 socket
-
Remove the seat back harness connector from the seat bottom
Note1x connector, 1x fir tree clip
-
Remove zip tie securing harnesses to spring mat
- Return seat to upright position
-
Remove the outboard fasteners securing the seat back frame to the seat cushion frame
Note2x patch bolts, T50, 43 Nm, Discard after removal
-
Remove the inboard fasteners securing the seat back frame to the cushion frame
Note2x patch bolts, T50, 43 Nm, Discard after removal
-
Remove the seat back frame from the cushion frame
NoteRotate the frame away from the cushion frame and lift the seat frame straight up
-
Turn the seat bottom over for access
NoteProtect seat cushion from damage
-
Disconnect seat bottom connectors
Note2x connectors, 1x fir tree clip
-
Disconnect seat belt reminder connector
Note1x connector, 1x clip, Slide connector towards back of seat bottom to release connector from clip
-
Release seat belt reminder from spring mat
Note1x clip, Slide seat belt reminder towards back of seat bottom to release connector from clip
- Return seat to upright position
-
Disconnect the seat belt buckle
Note1x connector

Remove the seat belt buckle from the seat track assembly
Note1x patch bolt, T50, 40 Nm, Discard after removal
-
Remove inboard seat cushion soft trim from seat cushion frame
Note1x J-clip, May need to start with a hook tool, Pull the clip away from the frame to release
-
Remove outboard seat cushion soft trim from seat cushion frame
Note1x J-clip, May need to start with a hook tool, Pull the clip away from the frame to release
-
Remove front of seat cushion soft trim from seat cushion frame
Note1x J-clip, May need to start with a hook tool, Pull the clip away from the frame to release
-
Remove seat cushion from seat bottom frame
NoteLift up at the front of the seat cushion and pull up to remove seat cushion from seat bottom frame, Ensure harness connectors do not catch on seat bottom frame when removing

Install seat cushion to seat bottom frame
NoteInsert the rear of the seat cushion to seat bottom frame and then lower the rest on the seat cushion to the seat bottom frame, Ensure wiring harness are routed through the back of seat frame

Install outboard seat cushion soft trim to seat cushion frame
Note1x J-clip, Fold the clip over towards the frame, The open end should engage the seat frame, if not the trim will need to be pulled until the correct amount of tension is achieved, Line up one end of the clip strip opening with the seat frame and press down until the clip is fully seated onto the frame

Install inboard seat cushion soft trim to seat cushion frame
Note1x J-clip, Fold the clip over towards the frame, The open end should engage the seat frame, if not the trim will need to be pulled until the correct amount of tension is achieved, Line up one end of the clip strip opening with the seat frame and press down until the clip is fully seated onto the frame

Install front of seat cushion soft trim to seat cushion frame
Note1x J-clip, Fold the clip over towards the frame, The open end should engage the seat frame, if not the trim will need to be pulled until the correct amount of tension is achieved, Line up one end of the clip strip opening with the seat frame and press down until the clip is fully seated onto the frame

Install seat belt buckle to the new seat track assembly
Note1x patch bolt, T50, 40 Nm, Install new patch bolt

Connect the seat belt buckle
Note1x connector

Place the front seat in a position to gain access to the bottom of the seat
NoteProtect seat cushion from damage

Install seat belt reminder to spring mat
Note1x clip
-
Connect seat belt reminder connector
Note1x connector, 1x clip, Slide connector towards front of seat bottom to secure connector to clip
-
Install seat bottom connectors
Note2x connector, 1x fir tree clip
-
Install toe kick j-hooks to seat mat spring
Note2x J-hooks
-
Return seat to upright position
-
Place the seat back frame onto the cushion frame for installation
NoteThe seat back frame can rest on the cushion frame without fasteners
-
Install the outboard fasteners securing the seat back frame to the cushion frame
Note2x patch bolts, T50, 43 Nm, Install new patch bolts
-
Install the inboard fasteners securing the seat back frame to the cushion frame
Note2x patch bolts, T50, 43 Nm, Install new patch bolts
-
Place the front seat in a position to gain access to the bottom of the seat
NoteProtect seat cushion from damage
-
If equipped, position the seat track position sensor on the new seat track assembly, and then install the screw that attaches the sensor to the seat track assembly.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- T20 socket

If equipped, connect the seat track position sensor.
Note1x connector.

Install the seat back harness connector to the seat bottom
Note1x connector, 1x fir tree clip
-
Connect the seat heater harness and secure to spring mat clip
Note1x connector, 1x clip, secure connector to spring mat clip
-
Route LH sensor harnesses underneath toe kick strap
-
Zip-tie both LH seat back heater and sensor harnesses onto spring mat
Note1x zip tie
-
Secure the toe kick straps from both sides of the interior seat base
Note2x hook clips
- Return seat to upright position
-
Position inboard side shield to the LH front seat and slide forward to secure rear tab
NoteApply light pressure to the rear of the inboard side shield to fully seat onto the seat frame, A fully installed trim should not show any metal from the frame and should line up with the contour of the seat back

Route seat belt buckle into inboard side shield
-
Install inboard side shield clip from seat
Note1x clip, 1x hook, Ensure hook is secured to seat bottom frame
-
Position outer side cover to the LH front seat and slide forward to secure rear tab
NoteApply light pressure to the rear of the outer trim to fully seat onto the seat frame, A fully installed trim should not show any metal from the frame and should line up with the contour of the seat back

Install seat switch connector
Note1x connector

Secure outer side cover clip into LH front seat
Note1x clip, Apply pressure to the outer seat trim to fully seat the trim clip, the trim should sit flush against the seat cushion

Install screw securing outer side cover to LH front seat
Note1x screw, T20, 4 Nm
-
Install LH front seat into vehicle
NoteRecommend Assistance, Take care not to damage surrounding components while lifting the seat into the vehicle

Connect LH front seat harness
Note1x connector
-
Connect First Responder Loop and 12V negative terminal
Note1x nut, 10mm, 5 Nm, 1x connector
-
Move LH front seat forward
-
Install LH front seat rear fasteners
Note2x patch bolts, T47P, 33.5 Nm, Install new patch bolts

Move LH front seat backward
-
Install LH front seat front fasteners
Note2x patch bolts, T47P, 33.5 Nm, Install new patch bolts

Move LH front seat to original position
-
Replacement front seat assemblies and seat cushion frame assemblies procured after June 2024 are equipped with a newly-designed Tesla "mini-tilt" motor, and replacing these parts (or the tilt motor itself) might require a configuration change. Review the configuration information in the table and perform the following substeps if a configuration update is needed.
- Access the Vehicle Configuration section of the Infotainment Dashboard. See Gateway Configuration (Display and Change).
- Update cfg_frontSeattype according to the combination of tilt motors described in the table.
- Place vehicle in service mode with touchscreen
- Using Laptop connect to vehicle with a tethered Ethernet connection via Toolbox 3.0

To run routine successfully, apply foot to brake pedal and hold right turn signal indicator for 10 plus seconds
NoteThis step is required even when using a tethered Ethernet connection, Refer to Toolbox Article 99100 for details, Routine can be run after the 10 seconds expires, Key fob must be present in vehicle
- Select ‘Actions/Autodiag’ and search for ‘Calibration’

Select ‘PROC_VCSEATD_SEAT-CALIBRATEvia Toolbox: (link)’, and allow routine to complete
NoteSelect ‘X’ at top right of window to close once complete

Disconnect Toolbox from vehicle and install cubby under the MCU

- Exit Service Mode
- Close both doors on the LH side

Install HEPA filter outlet duct
-
Install HEPA filter inlet duct
Note2x tabs, One on each side

Install clips securing HEPA filter inlet duct to cowl panel
Note3x push clips

Secure drainage hoses to HEPA filter inlet duct

Install LH underhood apron
