Steering Rack (RHD Dual Motor) (1st Generation) (Remove and Replace)

This procedure is for DM vehicles built before April 10, 2016.

If the 12V power supply is disconnected, do not attempt to open any doors with door glass in closed position. Failure to follow this instruction could result in door glass shatter.

Note
Before disconnecting the 12V power supply, ensure that the driver’s door window is fully open. Failure to follow this instruction could result in vehicle lockout.

If the vehicle has air suspension, activate "Jack" mode on the touchscreen before raising and supporting the vehicle.

Removal

  1. Remove the front subframe. See Subframe Assembly - Front (1st Generation) (Dual Motor) (Remove and Install) .
  2. Remove the stabilizer bar from the subframe.
  3. Remove the LH tie rod end.

    Count the number of turns and remember for installation.
  4. Remove RH tie rod end.

  5. Remove the bolts (x2) (torque 175 Nm) that attach the steering rack assembly to the subframe.

    Record the positions of any shims.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Replace all nylon-insert locknuts.

Replace all patchbolt(s).
  1. Ensure that the lower intermediate shaft to pinion markings align correctly.
  2. When installing the bolts that attach the steering rack to the subframe, follow this sequence:

    Install the steering rack with new bolts.

    Make sure to install the shim(s) between the steering gear and the subframe if these were installed previously.
    1. Tighten the LH bolt to 30 Nm.
    2. Tighten the RH bolt to 30 Nm.
    3. Fully torque the LH bolt to 175 Nm.
    4. Fully torque the RH bolt to 175 Nm.
  3. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  4. Update the vehicle firmware. See Firmware Update.
  5. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
  6. Using Toolbox 3:
    1. Select the Actions tab and search for "EPAS Post Replacement"
    2. Select the ODIN routine PROC_EPAS_X_POST-REPLACEMENTvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Chassis ➜ Steering ➜ Post Steering Rack Replacement, and then click the link of the routine.
    3. Click RUN, and allow the routine to complete.
  7. Perform a Lock To Lock-Angle test. See Lock To Lock-Angle Test.
  8. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  9. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
