Intermediate Shaft - Steering Column - Lower (RWD) (Remove and Replace)

Removal
- Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace) .
- Remove the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace) .
- Remove the front underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Front (Remove and Replace) .
- Remove the HEPA filter outlet duct. See Duct - HEPA Filter - Outlet (Remove and Replace) .
- Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install) .
- Disconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
- Remove the 12V auxiliary battery. See Battery - Auxiliary - 12V (Remove and Replace) .

Locate the bolt and nut that attach the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the upper steering column intermediate shaft.
NoteTurn the steering wheel until the bolt and nut are accessible.

From the top of the vehicle, remove and discard the nut and bolt that attach the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the upper steering column intermediate shaft.
NoteLoosen the nut, and then remove the fasteners by hand.NoteThe nut is welded onto upper intermediate shafts on vehicles built July 2017 onwards. On vehicles built before this date, check the upper intermediate shaft and order a new nut if it is not welded to the shaft.

From the top of the vehicle, remove and discard the bolt that attaches the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack input shaft.

Install the steering wheel holder on the steering wheel.
NoteThe steering wheel holder prevents damage to the clockspring during the removal of the lower intermediate steering column shaft.

Slide the lower portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft up and off the steering rack input shaft.

Slide down the upper portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft to separate it from the upper steering column intermediate shaft, and then remove the lower steering column intermediate shaft from the vehicle.
Installation

Model S vehicles built before April 10, 2016: Install the cold weather boot onto the lower steering column intermediate shaft.

Model S vehicles built after April 10, 2016: using a paintbrush, apply Krytox lubricant on all of the intermediate shaft u-joint seals and crevices.
- Position the lower steering column intermediate shaft for installation on the vehicle.

Slide the upper portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft up and onto the upper steering column intermediate shaft.

Slide the lower portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft down and onto the steering rack input shaft.

Install the new bolt that attaches the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack.
- Model S vehicles built before April 10, 2016: (torque 49 Nm)
- Model S vehicles built after April 10, 2016: (torque 30 Nm)
- Remove the steering wheel holder from the vehicle.

Install the new nut and bolt that attach the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the upper steering column intermediate shaft (torque 49 Nm).
NoteThe nut is welded onto upper intermediate shafts on vehicles built July 2017 onwards. On vehicles built before this date, check the upper intermediate shaft and order a new nut if it is not welded to the shaft.
- Install the 12V auxiliary battery. See Battery - Auxiliary - 12V (Remove and Replace) .
- Reconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
- Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install) .
- Install the front underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Front (Remove and Replace) .
- Install the HEPA filter outlet duct. See Duct - HEPA Filter - Outlet (Remove and Replace) .
- Install the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace) .
- Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace) .

If the vehicle is configured with
a Bosch steering rack, perform these additional steps, otherwise go to step 17.
- Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
- Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
- In Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "Calibrate-Steering-Column" into the search field, click PROC_SUN_X_CALIBRATE-STEERING-COLUMNvia Toolbox: (link), click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
- Once all Toolbox 3 routines have been completed, disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
- Perform a lock-to-lock angle test. See Lock To Lock-Angle Test.
- With the vehicle in Park, tires touching the ground, and brake pedal depressed, perform 4 lock-to-lock steering inputs, noting any friction, grinding, or other abnormal sensations from the steering wheel. Repeat this test with the brake pedal released.
- Raise the vehicle slightly so that the tires are off the ground.
- With the vehicle in Park and the brake pedal released, perform 4 lock-to-lock steering inputs, noting any friction, grinding, or other abnormal sensations from the steering wheel. If any concerns were detected while performing the previous steering sweeps, perform further diagnosis to identify the cause for these concerns.
