Spring and Damper Assembly - Front - LH (Remove and Replace)

Removal

  1. Verify there is no abnormal tire wear per the Courtesy Inspection.

    Download and complete SC-14-00-001 (Standard Courtesy Inspection Checklist) as courtesy inspection is being performed. Note any abnormal tire wear that could indicate the need for a four wheel alignment.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  3. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the LH underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace).
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  6. Remove the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  7. Release the LH front wheel speed sensor harness grommets (x2).
  8. Remove the jounce hose clip.

    Note
    Take note of the orientation of the clip for installation.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Remove the nuts that attach the LH front spring and damper to the vehicle.
    39 Nm (28.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  11. Raise and support the vehicle.
  12. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH front knuckle to the LH upper control arm, and then remove the knuckle from the control arm.
    60 Nm (44.2 lbs-ft)

    CAUTION
    Place one hand on the knuckle when releasing pry bar.

    Note
    Use pry bar to relieve tension on bolt.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 15 mm socket
    • T50 socket
  13. Remove the bolt and nut that attaches the LH front spring and damper assembly to the LH front lower aft link, and then remove the assembly from the aft link.
    140 Nm (103.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm combination wrench
  14. Lift the LH front spring and damper assembly upward, and then maneuver the assembly downward between the aft link and jounce hose to remove it from the vehicle.

    CAUTION
    Make sure to not damage the halfshaft if removing a spring and damper assembly from a DM vehicle.

    Note
    Replace LH and RH front spring and damper assemblies if the vehicle has over 80,500 kilometers (50,000 miles).

Installation

  1. Maneuver the LH front spring and damper assembly between the aft link and jounce and into position. With the help of an assistant, install and hand tighten the nuts (x3) that attach the assembly to the vehicle.
  2. Tighten the nuts (x3) that attach the LH front spring and damper assembly to the vehicle, and then mark the nuts with a paint pen.
    39 Nm (28.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  3. Install and hand tighten the bolt and nut that attaches the LH front spring and damper assembly to the LH front lower aft link.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm combination wrench
  4. Install the bolt and nut that attach the LH front knuckle to the LH upper control arm, and then mark the nut and bolt with a paint pen.
    60 Nm (44.2 lbs-ft)

    Note
    Use a pry bar to hold down the control arm when installing the bolt.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 15 mm socket
    • T50 socket
  5. Position and raise a support stand to simulate the LH front suspension at ride height.
  6. Remove existing paint mark from the LH spring and damper bolt and LH upper control arm nut.

    Note
    Clean the area thoroughly so the new marking is not confused with the previous marking.
  7. Torque the bolt and nut that attaches the LH front spring and damper assembly to the LH front lower aft link, and then mark the bolt with a paint pen.
    140 Nm (103.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm combination wrench
  8. Install the jounce hose clip.
    • Rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicles: The hose and clip are installed from the same direction.

      Note
      Ensure that the clip is fully seated, with the “fingers” both remaining on the bottom side of the retaining bracket.

    • Dual motor (DM) vehicles: The clip is installed from the rear.

      Note
      Ensure that the clip is fully seated, with the “fingers” both remaining on the bottom side of the retaining bracket.

  9. Install the LH front wheel speed sensor harness grommets (x2).
  10. Install the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  11. Install the LH underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace).
  12. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  13. Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  14. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  15. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
