Battery - Auxiliary - 12V (Remove and Replace)

Warning
If the 12V power
supply is disconnected, do not attempt to open any doors with door glass in
closed position. Failure to follow this instruction could result in door glass
shatter.
Note
Before
disconnecting the 12V power supply, ensure that the driver’s door window is
fully open. Failure to follow this instruction could result in vehicle
lockout.
1st Generation RWD
Correction Code 17011212
Removal
- Disconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .

Battery top-mounted fuse box only:

Without battery top-mounted fuse box:

Carefully lift the 12V battery and remove it.
NoteIt can be difficult to remove the Model S AGM batteries because they do not have handles. It might be helpful to use duct tape in order to lift the battery high enough so that it can be supported from the bottom:
- Write the last 6 digits of the vehicle VIN clearly onto the removed battery so that it can be identified later if needed.
Installation
Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:
CAUTION
Before installing the new battery, make sure that the new battery's Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) is above 12.6V. If the OCV is between 12.4V and 12.6V, recharge the new battery. Any battery below 12.4V must be discarded.

Make sure that the HVAC intake drain diverter is positioned properly when reinstalling the pollen filter front housing.
CAUTIONTake care not to damage component(s).

If a different type of
battery is installed than originally installed, the "12V Battery Type"
configuration must be updated. If no configuration update is required,
discontinue this procedure.
NoteIf a configuration update is required, separately add Correction Code 91022407 (Vehicle Configuration Update) to the Service Visit.
- For vehicles operating with software version 2023.20 or later, go to step 3.
- For vehicles operating with software version earlier than 2023.20, continue wit the next step.
- Use the touchscreen to update the vehicle's gateway "12V Battery Type".
1st Generation Dual Motor

Removal
- Disconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .

Without battery top-mounted fuse box:
- Remove the battery from the tray.
- Write the last 6 digits of the vehicle VIN clearly onto the removed battery so that it can be identified later if needed.
Installation
Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Before installing the new battery, make sure that the new battery's Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) is above 12.6V. If the OCV is between 12.4V and 12.6V, recharge the new battery. Any battery below 12.4V must be discarded.

2nd Generation
Correction Code 17011302
Removal
- Disconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
- Disconnect the 12V positive terminal clamp from the 12V battery (torque 6 Nm).
- Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).

Remove the nuts (x2) and bolt (x1) that attach the battery strap to the battery (torque 5 Nm). Remove the strap.
- Remove the battery from the tray.
- Write the last 6 digits of the vehicle VIN clearly onto the removed battery so that it can be identified later if needed.
Installation
Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:
