Drive Unit - Front (1st Generation) (Remove and Replace)

Removal
- Remove the old front drive unit. See Drive Unit - Front (1st Generation) (Remove and Install) .
Component Transfer
Before starting this procedure, the
old front drive unit should be on the transmission jack.
- Moves the old front drive unit from the transmission jack to the crate.
- Moves the new front drive unit from the crate to the transmission jack.
- Transfers components from the old front drive unit to the new front drive unit.
- Move a coolant catcher under the old front drive unit and drain the coolant from the old front drive unit.

Remove the coolant hose from the
rear of the old front drive unit.
Tip: Use flexible hose clamp pliers to release the locking rings.
- Move the coolant catcher out from under the old front drive unit.

Secure the sling tool to the old
front drive unit:
NoteDo not use the blue sling leg of the sling tool for this procedure.
- Secure the sling tool to the gantry.
- Move the crate with the new front drive unit to the gantry area.
- Open the crate and set the lid on the ground. Put the padded surface facing up.
- Use the sling tool to raise the old front drive unit off of the transmission jack.
- While suspended, remove and retain the acoustic padding from the old front drive unit.
- Completely lower the old front drive unit onto the padded surface of the crate lid, so that there is slack in the sling tool sling legs.
- Remove the sling tool from the old front drive unit.
- Secure the sling tool to the new front drive unit. Refer to step #TASK_X5F_323_TQ__GUID-8E9D6B90-099A-4CE4-A440-D06D8A72FDC6.
- Raise the new front drive unit to a working height.
- Install the acoustic padding onto the new front drive unit.
- Position the transmission jack fixture underneath the new front drive unit.
- Raise the transmission jack to support the weight of the new front drive unit, so that there is slack in the sling tool sling legs.
- With the help of an assistant, make sure that the ridge on the base of the new front drive unit fits into the channel on the transmission jack.
- Remove the sling tool from the new front drive unit.
- Install a new top bolt to attach the new LH front drive unit mount to the new front drive unit (torque 38 Nm).
- Install the coolant hose onto the new front drive unit.
- Secure the sling tool to the old front drive unit. Refer to step #TASK_X5F_323_TQ__GUID-8E9D6B90-099A-4CE4-A440-D06D8A72FDC6
- Move the old front drive unit to the crate.
- Remove the sling tool from the old front drive unit.
- Install the top bolt that attaches the old LH front drive unit mount to the old front drive unit (hand-tighten only).
Installation
CAUTION
Before installing
the drive unit, make sure that the correct output seal is installed to the LH side of
the drive unit. An incorrect output seal fitted to the drive unit will cause oil
leakage!
- A new or remanufactured drive unit comes with an output seal with part number 1065932-00-A, which fits the old LH half shaft with part number 1027111-00-D.
- If a new LH halfshaft is installed (part number 1553109-00-B), make sure to replace the LH output seal: install the output seal with part number 1108557-00-A. See Seal - Axle - Front Drive Unit - LH (1st Generation) (Remove and Replace) but use Output Seal Install Tool 1131206-00-A to install the output seal.
- Install the new front drive unit. See Drive Unit - Front (1st Generation) (Remove and Install) .
- For China, Japan and Korea only: Carefully remove the old motor label from the hood, and install a new motor label to match the new motor information.
- Update the vehicle firmware. See Firmware Update.
