Air Spring Module - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace)

Note
When replacing an air spring module for failure, inspect all air spring modules for leak, wear, or reduced performance, and replace them as necessary.

Removal

  1. Raise the vehicle and deflate the rear air spring module. See Air Suspension - Pressurize/Depressurize - One Air Spring.
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the HEPA filter inlet duct. See Duct - HEPA Filter - Inlet (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  6. Remove the rear wheel arch liner. See Wheel Arch Liner - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  7. Release the red locking tab to disconnect the electric parking brake caliper harness connector.
  8. Disconnect the upper LH rear air spring module connector.
  9. Disconnect the lower LH rear air spring module connector.
  10. Release the tabs (x2) to release the LH rear air spring module harness bracket from the air spring.
  11. Remove the bolt that attaches the park brake chassis harness bracket to the LH rear knuckle, and then move the harness aside.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 11 mm deep socket
  12. Remove the bolt that secures the rear upper link to the knuckle. Release the bushing from the knuckle, lifting the arm for access.

    The bolt size may vary from 15mm to 18mm.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 15 mm socket
    • 3 in extension
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
  13. Remove the bolt and the nut that secure the air spring module to the knuckle. Release the air spring module from the suspension knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 21 mm deep socket
    • Combination Wrench 12pt 21mm
    • Prybar Med
  14. Release the fitting for the air suspension line from the air spring module (yellow arrow).
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Combination Wrench 12pt 10mm
  15. For each released end of an air suspension line, use a flat blade screwdriver to snap off the old collet, and discard the collet and nut (VOSS fitting).
  16. Remove and discard the nuts (x3) that secure the air spring module to the body (red arrows).
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • 11 in extension
    • 15 mm deep socket
  17. Remove the LH rear air spring module from the vehicle.

    Note
    Remove the air spring module towards the rear of the vehicle. Pull the knuckle away from the vehicle to allow space between the knuckle and the brake line mount.

Installation

CAUTION
Ensure that the bolt that secures the spring assembly to the knuckle is inserted towards the rear of the vehicle; the head of the bolt faces the front of the vehicle and the nut is tightened at the rear.

CAUTION
Only fully tighten suspension nuts and bolts when the vehicle is on a 4-post lift and the suspension is in the ride height position.
  1. Position the LH rear air spring module into the vehicle

    Note
    Route the air spring module past the brake line mount, align the module on the mounting studs, and then insert the lower mount to the knuckle.
  2. Install new nuts (2007059-00-B) (x3) that secure the air spring module to the body (red arrows).
    40 Nm (29.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 15 mm deep socket
    • 11 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  3. Install the air line in LH rear air spring module.

    Note
    Remove the white plug and fully insert the air line into the fitting. The fitting should sit between the two marks on the air line. Perform a push and pull test to verify the line is properly seated.
  4. Hand-tighten the bolt and the nut that secure the air spring module to the knuckle.

    Use a screwdriver to align bolt hole. Torque at later step.
  5. Hand-tighten the bolt that secures the rear upper link to the knuckle.

    Torque at later step. The bolt size may vary from 15mm to 18mm.
  6. Install a hub jack adapter (1459409-00-A) onto the LH rear hub.

    Note
    Hand tight the adapter lug nuts. Use a modified hydraulic hub tool if the correct adapter is not available.
  7. Position and raise the support stand to simulate the LH rear suspension at ride height. The distance from the upper fore link to the bolt on the frame rail should be 85mm +/- 5mm.
  8. Torque the bolt that secures the rear upper link to the knuckle.
    140 Nm (103.2 lbs-ft)

    The bolt size may vary from 15mm to 18mm. Mark with a paint pen.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • 3 in extension
    • 15 mm socket/18 mm socket
    • Paint Pen
  9. Torque the bolt and the nut that secure the air spring module to the knuckle.
    140 Nm (103.2 lbs-ft)

    Mark with a paint pen.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • Combination Wrench 12pt 21mm
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • Paint Pen
  10. Lower the support stand until the suspension is unladen, and then remove the support stand and the hub jack adapter.
  11. Install the bolt that attaches the park brake chassis harness bracket to the LH rear knuckle.
    35 Nm (25.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 11 mm deep socket
  12. Secure the tabs (x2) to install the LH rear air spring module harness bracket to the air spring.
  13. Connect the lower LH rear air spring module connector.
  14. Connect the upper LH rear air spring module connector.
  15. Secure the red locking tab to connect the electric parking brake caliper harness connector.
  16. Install the rear wheel arch liner. See Wheel Arch Liner - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  17. Install the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  18. Refill the new air spring module or air suspension system. See Air Suspension - Pressurize/Depressurize - One Air Spring or Air Suspension - Pressurize/Depressurize - Full System

    Note

    If the component was replaced because of a leak, perform the air dryer regeneration procedure to purge the accumulated moisture from the dryer. See Air Dryer - Tesla Air Suspension (Regenerate), and add correction code 31101008 as a separate activity to the Service Visit.

  19. Install the HEPA filter inlet duct. See Duct - HEPA Filter - Inlet (Remove and Replace).
  20. Install the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace).
  21. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  22. On the laptop, select the Actions tab and search for "TAS service mode", select PROC_TAS_X_ENTER-NORMAL-MODESearch for routine in ToolboxTAS Enter Normal Run Mode, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  23. Disconnect the laptop.
  24. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
  25. On the touchscreen, tap Controls > Suspension > Low > Very High to verify the operation of the air suspension.

    Note
    All doors must be closed to allow the ride height to cycle. Set the suspension back to ''Standard'' after verification.
  26. Exit Service Mode through UI. See Service Mode.
  27. Close the LH front door.
  28. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
