technicians who have been trained in High Voltage Awareness and
have completed all required certification courses (if applicable) are permitted to
perform this procedure. Proper personal protective equipment
(PPE) and insulating HV gloves with a minimum rating
of class 0 (1000V) must be worn at all times a high voltage
cable, busbar, or fitting is handled. Refer to Tech Note TN-15-92-003,

Retrofit
-
Remove the HV battery. See HV Battery (RWD/AWD) (Remove and Install).
CAUTIONInspect the HV battery for damage. If any dents, fluid leaks, or other signs of instability present, escalate a Toolbox session.
- Ensure the entire work area is clear and then place an HV Danger placard on the top of the battery.
- Remove the HV insulating gloves.
- Place barricades around the work area.
- Remove and discard the 1st-generation battery blanket.
-
Remove the bulb seals that cover
the perimeter of the HV battery cover.
CAUTIONDo not remove the sealing strip that routes laterally across the front of the HV battery.
-
Use an adhesive-removal rubber
wheel on a rotary multi-tool or cordless drill to remove any adhesive residue or
bulb seal remnants from the HV battery cover.
WarningWear protective eyewear and hearing protection when using a rotary multi-tool or drill.CAUTION:Do not damage the e-coating on the HV battery cover. Ensure that the rotary multi-tool or cordless drill is on the lowest speed setting while removing the adhesive residue or bulb seal remnants.
- Use alcohol wipes to clean the affected areas and allow the alcohol to fully dry.
- Make sure there is no corrosion or damage to the e-coating on the top and sides of the battery cover.
-
Remove and discard the HV battery
pack spacers (x10).
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
- Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
- Vacuum around the 10 exposed holes.
-
Install a short head spacer
(1018551-00-B) in each of the 2 holes near the rear of the HV battery.NoteDo not remove the red tape from the top of the spacer at this point.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 10 mm socket
- Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
-
Install a tall head spacer
(1018552-00-B) in each of the 8 holes near the center of the HV battery.NoteDo not remove the red tape from the top of the spacer at this point.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 10 mm socket
- Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
-
Check if a grommet is installed
near the front of the HV battery.
- If a grommet is installed, continue to the next step.
- If there is no grommet is installed, perform a battery enclosure leak test.
- Use a towel to dry the fastener that is located under the grommet.
-
Apply Right Stuff sealant under
the grommet near the front of the HV battery.
CAUTIONForm a complete barrier between the depression in the battery cover and the grommet.
-
Remove the red tape from the top
of each spacer.
CAUTIONDo not touch the adhesives on the spacers while installing the 2nd generation Battery blanket.
- Install the 2nd generation battery blanket. See HV Battery Blanket (Remove and Replace).
- Install the HV battery. See HV Battery (RWD/AWD) (Remove and Install).
