Brake Pads and Rotors - Rear - Set (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  3. Release the LH and RH park brake calipers using Toolbox. See Park Brake Caliper - Release.
  4. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  5. Place absorbent material underneath the brake booster and the brake fluid reservoir area.
  6. Clean the area around brake fluid reservoir, and then remove the brake reservoir cap.
  7. Remove the LH and RH rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  8. Release the red locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical harness from the RH rear brake caliper motor connector.
  9. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the RH rear caliper to the bracket, and then let the caliper hang from the body.
    26 Nm (19.2 lbs-ft)

    • 14 mm socket
  10. Use a caliper spreader kit or similar tool to gently push the pistons back into the brake caliper.
  11. Remove the brake pads (x2) from the rear caliper bracket.

    Note
    Press the anti-rattle spring tab (x1 on each side) to release the brake pads.
  12. Remove the anti-rattle springs (x2) from the rear brake caliper.
  13. Clean the RH rear brake caliper with brake cleaner.

    Use a nylon brush only, if necessary.

    Allow 1 minute dry time.
  14. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the RH rear brake caliper to the rear knuckle, and then let the caliper hang from the body using S-hooks.
    115 Nm (84.8 lbs-ft)

    Note
    Route the caliper hose so that it does not get caught on the rear stabilizer bar.
  15. If installed, remove the bolt that attaches the RH rotor to the hub.

    Some vehicles may not have this fastener installed from the factory.

    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  16. Remove the RH rotor from the rear knuckle.
  17. Repeat step 8 through step 16 for the LH side of the vehicle.

Install

  1. Position the RH rear rotor onto the rear knuckle.
  2. Install the RH rear brake caliper to the knuckle, and then secure the caliper with bolts (x2).
    115 Nm (84.8 lbs-ft)

    • External Torx E18
  3. Install the anti-rattle springs (x2) onto the rear brake caliper.
  4. Install the brake pads (x2) onto the rear caliper bracket.

    Make sure the brake pads seat past the spring tabs.
  5. If a Mando calipler, use needle-nose pliers to ensure that the slots in the rear brake caliper piston face are at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.
  6. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the rear caliper onto the bracket.
    26 Nm (19.2 lbs-ft)

  7. Connect the EPB electrical connector to the caliper motor.

    Note
    Fully seat the electrical connector, and then engage the locking tab.
  8. Repeat step 1 through step 7 on the LH side of the vehicle.
  9. Install the LH and RH rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  10. Pump the brake pedal repeatedly until firm to seat the brake pads against the rotors.
  11. Check brake fluid level and top off the reservoir, if necessary.

    If the brake fluid level is above the Max line, remove the extra brake fluid.
  12. Install the brake reservoir cap.
  13. Remove the absorbent material from underneath the brake booster and brake fluid reservoir area.
  14. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  15. Burnish the brakes. See Brake Pads - Burnishing.
