Brake Pads - Front (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Place absorbent material underneath the brake booster and the brake fluid reservoir area.
  4. Clean the area around brake fluid reservoir, and then remove the brake reservoir cap.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle on a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  6. Remove the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  7. Remove the bolt that attaches the brake hose to the LH front knuckle.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)

    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  8. Release the tabs (x2) for each anti-rattle clip (x2), and then remove brake pad anti-rattle clips from the front brake caliper.
  9. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the front brake caliper to the knuckle, and then allow the caliper to hang from the body using S-hooks.
    135 Nm (99.6 lbs-ft)

  10. Remove the brake pads from the front brake caliper.

    Note
    2 guide pins each.
  11. Repeat steps 7 through 10 for the RH side.

Install

  1. Use a caliper spreader kit or similar tool to gently push the pistons back into the front brake caliper.
  2. Clean the front brake caliper.

    Use a nylon brush only, if necessary.

    Allow 1 minute dry time.
  3. Install the brake pads (x2) to the front brake caliper.

    2 guide pins each.
  4. Install the brake pad anti-rattle clips (x2) to the front brake caliper.

    CAUTION
    Make sure the brake pad clip rests on the brake pad bevel as pictured. Reposition or replace the brake pad clip as needed.

    2x tabs on each anti-rattle clip.
  5. Install the front brake caliper onto the knuckle.
    135 Nm (99.6 lbs-ft)

  6. Install the bolt that attaches the brake hose to the LH front knuckle.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)

    • 10 mm socket
  7. Repeat step 1 through 6 for the RH side.
  8. Install the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  9. Pump the brake pedal repeatedly until firm to seat the brake pads against the rotors.
  10. Check brake fluid level and top off the reservoir, if necessary.

    If the brake fluid level is above the Max line, remove the extra brake fluid.
  11. Install the brake reservoir cap.
  12. Remove the absorbent material from underneath the brake booster and brake fluid reservoir area.
  13. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  14. Perform a road test and burnish brakes. Ensure proper brake pedal feel and performance.
