Inclination angle in Adjustment Mode versus under normal driving conditions

Under normal driving conditions (i.e. when the vehicle is not in adjustment mode), the headlights automatically level to a region specific vertical (downward) and horizontal (left/right depending on the vehicle being RHD/LHD) angle. This means that when you check the headlight adjustment while not in adjustment mode, the headlight beam will project lower than the tape marks on the wall.
For example: for Europe, the headlight beam vertical inclination angle is -1%. This means that, with the vehicle at a distance of 7.62 m (25 ft) from the wall, the beam will project 7.62 cm (3 in) under the tape mark on the wall.

Adjust Headlights Using a Wall

  1. Position the vehicle for adjusting the headlights. The vehicle should be:
    • Located in a darker work area with low ambient lighting.
    • Parked on a level surface.
    • Perpendicular to a wall that has a matte surface. The wall must be at least 1.83 m (6 ft) high and 3.76 m (12 ft) wide.
  2. Make sure there are no low tire pressure alerts on the touchscreen. If present, adjust tire pressures to specification.
  3. Apply tape to the wall at 68 cm (26.8 in) from the floor.
  4. Measure 7.62 m (25 ft) away from the wall and put a piece of tape on the ground to indicate where the vehicle should be parked.
  5. Park the vehicle perpendicular to the wall so that the front fascia is aligned with the tape that was put on the floor in the previous step.
  6. Confirm that the vehicle is positioned perpendicular to the wall by measuring the distance from the center of each front wheel to the wall. If necessary, reposition the vehicle until the distance between each front wheel to the wall is equal.

    Note
Maximum difference in distance between left and right is 3 mm (0.12 in).
  7. Project a laser beam perpendicular to the wall onto the center point of the vehicle, and then mark a center-line on the wall.
  8. Apply tape to the wall at 66 cm (26 in) to the left and to the right of the center line.

    Note
These reference marks will be the targets for horizontal adjustment.
  9. Enable Service Mode through the touchscreen. See Mode Entretien.
  10. On the touchscreen, touch Controls > Service > Adjust Headlights to enable Headlight Adjustment Mode.
  11. Enable test drive override through the touchscreen.

    Note
Ignore the text "Enable if using certain headlight aiming machines".
  12. Completely cover the RH headlight.
  13. Adjust LH headlight: touch Left on the touchscreen, and then use the left scroll wheel on the steering wheel to adjust the beam level. Adjust the LH headlight so that the top of the horizontal beam aligns with the horizontal tape mark on the wall, and the left edge of the L-shaped beam aligns with the LH vertical reference tape mark.

    Note
Do not sit in the vehicle during headlight aiming since this will affect the height of the headlight beam.
  14. Remove the cover from the RH headlight.
  15. Repeat steps 12 through 14, covering the LH headlight, and adjusting the RH headlight.
  16. Exit the headlight adjustment mode through the touchscreen.
  17. Exit Service Mode through the touchscreen.
