Media Control Unit (Remove and Replace)

  1. Open the LH front door and lower all windows.
  2. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See .
  3. Perform the Toolbox Owner Authorization Request.
    1. Log in to https://toolbox.tesla.com/help/owner_authorization.
    2. On the left panel, click Owner Authorization Request, and then click Request Owner Authorization in the main panel.
    3. Complete and submit the form.
    4. Ask the vehicle owner to approve the authorization request that was sent to their email.
  4. Click on Dashboards > Car Computer Replacement and on the "Getting Started" page, click on Next Step.
  5. On the "Backup & Factory Reset" page, click Next Step and follow the prompts to perform a profile backup and factory reset on the MCU.

  6. Transfer the touchscreen bezel from the old MCU to the new MCU:
    1. Position the touchscreen ESD foam container on an ESD mat.
    2. Remove the old MCU. See Unité de commande multimédia (retrait et installation).
    3. Gently place the old MCU on the ESD foam container with the touchscreen facing down
    4. Use a small screwdriver to move the SIM card release tab to the side and eject the SIM card.
    5. Remove the SIM card, with tweezers if necessary, and then set it aside on the ESD mat.

      ATTENTION
      If the old SIM card is to be replaced with a new one or the old SIM card is no longer needed, it is mandatory to destroy the old SIM card to protect user data. Cut the old SIM card in half through the center of the gold pads, and then cut each piece into half, resulting in 4 pieces.
    6. Use a small screwdriver to move the SD card release tab to the side and eject the SD card.

      ATTENTION
      If there is no slot on the MCU from which to remove the SD card, provide a note to MRB that the SD card of the returned MCU must be removed and destroyed.
    7. Use tweezers to remove the SD card from the MCU and set it aside on the antistatic mat.

      ATTENTION
      If the old SD card is to be replaced with a new one or the old SD card is no longer needed, it is mandatory to destroy the old SD card to protect user data. Cut the old SD card in half through the center, and then cut each piece into half, resulting in 4 pieces.
    8. Release the bluetooth antenna from the touchscreen bezel, cutting the cable tie if needed.
    9. Remove and retain the screws (x6) that attach the bezel to the MCU (torque 4 Nm).
    10. Lift the old MCU from the touchscreen bezel, and set the old MCU aside on its back.
    11. Transfer the protective sheet from the new MCU touchscreen to the old MCU touchscreen.
    12. Gently place the new MCU face-down onto the touchscreen bezel in the foam ESD container.
    13. Install the screws (x6) that attach the bezel to the MCU (torque 4 Nm).
    14. If needed, install the SD card into the new MCU.

      Make sure that the SD card is fully inserted, and that the release tab slides over the end of the SD card, securing the SD card in place.
    15. If needed, install the SIM card into the new MCU.

    16. Fasten the Bluetooth antenna to the touchscreen bezel with the cable tie.

      ATTENTION
      Make sure that the wiring sheath passes midway through the MCU back opening, so as to prevent rubbing and damage to the Bluetooth antenna wire.
    17. Position the new MCU assembly in the vehicle, attach all electrical harnesses, and fasten the MCU assembly to the IP carrier. See Unité de commande multimédia (retrait et installation).
  7. Connect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power.
  8. Connect a 12V charger to the 12V auxiliary battery terminals.
  9. Reestablish the Toolbox laptop connection, and in the "Replace" page, click Next Step to go to the "Associate" page.
  10. Follow the prompts to transfer configs and associate the replacement MCU. The MCU will reboot several times.
  11. When association is complete and the VIN is confirmed online, click Next Step to go to the "Update" page.

  12. Click Start Part Replacement OTA to deploy a software update to the vehicle.

  13. Install the vehicle software package via UI.
  14. In Toolbox, click Next Page to go to the "Restore" page, and then follow the prompts to restore the vehicle profile.
  15. Disconnect the laptop from the vehicle.
  16. Install the remaining components that were removed for access. See Unité de commande multimédia (retrait et installation).
