Subframe Assembly - Rear - Roadster 2.x

Correction code 30010402

Remove

  1. Raise vehicle on 2 post lift (refer to procedure).
  2. Remove trunk assembly (refer to procedure).
  3. Remove power train assembly (refer to procedure).
  4. Disconnect park brake inner cables from caliper levers.
  5. Release cable rubber seals and disconnect park brake outer cables from calipers.
  6. Loosen union and disconnect brake pipes from flexible hoses (torque 16 Nm).

    Plug pipe connections to prevent ingress of moisture or dirt.

    Note
    Place suitable absorbent material around the affected area to absorb any possible fluid spillage.
  7. Remove lock nuts (x2) securing brake hoses to subframe and disconnect brakes hoses from subframe (torque 16 Nm).

    CAUTION
    Make sure that brake hose is aligned correctly with no excessive twist or bends.
  8. Release brake pipes from clips on subframe and remove clips (x2).
  9. Remove nuts securing brake hose P-clip to LH lower wishbone and release P-clip (torque 9 Nm).
  10. Disconnect wheel speed sensors from harness and release connectors from subframe.
  11. Release clip securing harness to RH upper subframe.
  12. Release clips (x4) securing harness to subframe from behind transmission and maneuver harness upwards.
  13. Remove clip and release edge clips (x2) securing harness to LH upper subframe and position harness.
  14. Remove nut securing LH sway bar link to wishbone and release link from wishbone (torque 45 Nm).
  15. Remove Patchbolts (x4) securing sway bar to subframe and remove sway bar (torque 25 Nm).
  16. Remove brackets (x2) and collect backing plates (x2).
  17. Remove bushings from sway bar.

    Note
    Apply recommended grease to bearing/bushing surfaces.
  18. Release brake hose clips from track control arms.
  19. Remove nuts (x2) securing track control arms to uprights (torque 45 Nm).
  20. Release track control arm ball joints from uprights using suitable equipment.

  21. Remove RH track control arm.
  22. Remove Nyloc nuts (x2) securing lower wishbone ball joints to uprights (torque 55 Nm).
  23. Using suitable equipment, release wishbone ball joints from uprights.

    To avoid serious injury, use appropriate equipment to carry out this operation.
  24. Remove RH lower wishbone.
  25. Release lock tabs (x8) from nuts and bolts securing upper wishbone to subframe.
  26. Remove Nyloc nuts and bolts (x4) and lock tabs (x8) securing upper wishbone to subframe (torque 45 Nm).
  27. Remove both upper wishbone, hub and driveshaft assemblies from vehicle.
  28. Remove Nyloc nut and bolt securing LH lower wishbone/track control arm to subframe (torque 60 Nm).
  29. Remove LH track control arm.
  30. Remove bolt securing LH lower wishbone to crossmember (torque 45 Nm).

    CAUTION
    Only tighten wishbone pivot bolts when the suspension is in ride height position. This can be achieved by either using the ride height tools or when the vehicle is on its wheels.
  31. Remove Nyloc nut and bolt securing LH spring and damper assembly to subframe (torque 45 Nm).
  32. Remove LH lower wishbone and spring/damper assembly from vehicle.
  33. Disconnect exhaust fan connector.
  34. Remove nuts (x4) and brackets (x2) securing exhaust fan to subframe and remove exhaust fan (torque 15 Nm).
  35. Remove duct from subframe.
  36. Collect spacers (x4).
  37. Remove bolts (x2) securing body sides to subframe brackets.
  38. Remove bolts (x4) securing brackets to subframe and remove brackets (torque 12 Nm).
  39. Remove Patchbolts (x2) securing seat belt anchorage frame stays to subframe (torque 55 Nm).
  40. Support weight of battery with battery lift table.
  41. Remove Patchbolts (x6) securing battery brackets (x2) to subframe (torque 35 Nm).
  42. Support weight of subframe with suitable lifting equipment.
  43. Remove lower bolts and nuts (x2) securing subframe to chassis (torque 85 Nm).
  44. Remove upper bolts and nuts (x2) securing subframe to chassis (torque 85 Nm).

    Note
    When installing, apply Loctite®242™ thread locking compound to bolt/screw threads.
  45. With assistance remove subframe and collect shim plate adapters (x2).

Install

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Replace all nyloc nuts.

Replace all patchbolts.

  1. Align and install subframe to chassis by first installing LH upper bolt, then install the RH upper bolt before installing the 2 lower bolts.
  2. Bleed brake system. (refer to procedure).
  3. Check and adjust the park brake (refer to procedure).
  4. Perform a wheel alignment.
