Steering Rack

Correction code 32010102

Remove

  1. Raise and support vehicle.

    Do not work on an incorrectly supported vehicle.

  2. Remove driver seat (refer to procedure).
  3. Remove steering wheel (refer to procedure).
  4. Remove the wheel (torque 105 Nm).
  5. Loosen both tie rod end locknuts (torque 80 Nm).

    CAUTION
    To prevent tie rod damage always restrain tie rod with a wrench when loosening or tightening lock nut.
  6. Remove Nyloc nuts (x2) securing tie rod ends to steering arms (torque 30 Nm).
  7. Using a suitable tool, release tie rod ends from steering arms.

    To avoid serious injury, use appropriate equipment to carry out this operation.
  8. Mark lower shaft position relative to rack pinion shaft.
  9. Remove Nyloc nut and bolt securing lower shaft to rack (torque 40 Nm).
  10. Remove Patchbolts (x4) securing rack to body (torque - large 45 Nm, small 25 Nm).

    CAUTION
    Tighten bolts evenly using a diagonal sequence.
  11. Move rack forward and release lower shaft from rack and remove from vehicle.
  12. Remove steering rack seal.
  13. Noting the number of turns required, unscrew tie rod ends from tie rods.
  14. Remove lock nuts (x2) from rack.

Install

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Replace all nyloc nuts.

Replace all patchbolts.

  1. Make sure that the lower shaft to pinion markings align correctly.
  2. Fit tie rod ends using same number of turns as noted during removal.
  3. Check front toe alignment.
