- 2024-1-24: Add caution on making sure the front brake pad clip is properly installed.
This procedure describes a service performed when all four wheels have already been removed for another service, such as a winter tire to summer tire swap. If this procedure is to be performed standalone, then add the correction code 34012501 Wheels - Vehicle - Set (Remove & Install) to the Activity.
- First use a nylon brush to remove
corrosion build-up from brake caliper components. If that is ineffective, escalate to a
wire brush, and if that is still ineffective, escalate to a brake file.PRECAUCIÓNUse the brake file in single, forward strokes. Do not apply so much force as to remove any coating or metal from the caliper or carrier. 3 to 4 firm strokes of the file should smooth out the surface.
- First use a brake pad puller to remove any stuck brake pads before escalating to an air hammer with blunt chisel tip to break the pads free from the caliper.

-
Use a brush and Tesla–approved brake
cleaner to clean the guide pins, the piston faces, the inner surfaces of the front LH
caliper, and the brake pad edges and surfaces that contact the caliper, and allow at
least 1 minute to dry.
PRECAUCIÓNMake sure the run off does not contaminate the friction material.
- Use a brush and soapy water to clean both anti-rattle springs.
-
Apply a thin layer of Tesla-approved
brake caliper lubricant to both brake pad's guide pin (x2) and piston (x2) contact
points.
PRECAUCIÓNWipe off any excess lubricant and thoroughly clean any friction material that might have been contaminated.PRECAUCIÓNMake sure not to contaminate the piston seals or any rubber components of the caliper.
-
Install the outboard brake pad onto the LH front caliper guide pins and slide the pad
outward to seat against the caliper pistons. Repeat for the inboard pad.
PRECAUCIÓNDo not mix the inboard and outboard brake pads, as they have worn specifically to their respective position within the caliper.
-
Install the upper and lower brake pad anti-rattle clips onto the LH front brake
caliper, and then fasten the tabs (x2) that attach the clips to the caliper.
-
Remove the LH front caliper from the S-hook, remove the S-hook from the LH front
upper contron arm, install the caliper onto the LH front knuckle, and then install the
bolts (x2) that attach the caliper to the knucle.
-
Install the LH front jounce hose bracket to the LH front knuckle, and then install
the bolt that attaches the bracket to the knuckle.
- Rotate the LH front rotor 180 degrees, and then use the Tesla-approved brake cleaner to clean any lubricant or debris from the rotor. Repeat.
- Repeat step 10 through step 22 for the RH front caliper.
- If performing this procedure as a Mobile Service, install the front wheels, and then remove the rear wheels.
- Use a brush and Tesla–approved brake cleaner to clean dirt and debris from the outside of the LH rear caliper connector and LH EPB harness.
- Pull the red tab, and then pull the red tab a second time to disconnect the LH EPB harness from the LH rear caliper connector.
-
Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the
LH rear caliper to the LH rear carrier, and then separate the caliper from the
carrier.
NotaPrevent the brake pads from falling out of the carrier.
-
Use an S-hook to hang the LH rear caliper from the LH rear jounce hose bracket.
NotaMake sure that the LH rear jounce hose is slack, and not kinked.
-
Press the anti-rattle spring tabs to
release the brake pads, and then remove the pads from the LH rear carrier.
PRECAUCIÓNKeep the inboard pad and the outboard pad separate and organized.
-
Use a brush and Tesla–approved brake
cleaner to clean the abutment flats, the piston faces, the inner surfaces of the rear LH
caliper and rear LH carrier, the anti-rattle springs, the brake pad edges and surfaces
that contact the caliper or carrier, and allow at least 1 minute to dry.
PRECAUCIÓNMake sure the run off does not contaminate the friction material.
-
Apply a thin layer of Tesla-approved
brake caliper lubricant to the inboard brake pad's piston contact points and to the
outboard brake pad's caliper contact points.
