Backlite Glass (Model YL) (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Apply masking tape to the body around the backlight glass to protect the paint from damage.
  2. Remove the lower liftgate trim. See Liftgate Lower Trim (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect the backlight glass heater positive connector, and then release the clip that attaches the connector to the body.
  4. Disconnect the backlight glass heater ground strap connector, and then release the clip that attaches the connector to the body.
  5. Use a ball peen hammer and gasket scraper or equivalent tools to break both datums at both sides of the backlight glass.

  6. Prepare the WRD Spider 3 glass removal kit.

    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • WRD Spider 3 - 1571168-00-A
  7. Secure the wire to the starter tool, and then insert the starter tool from the inside of the vehicle through the adhesive bead near the LH datum of the backlight glass.

    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage the backlight glass while using the starter tool.
  8. Pull the nylon cord through.

    Note
    Make sure to pull enough nylon cord through to wrap around the perimeter of the glass.
  9. From the outside of the vehicle, wrap the nylon cord clockwise around the backlight glass urethane.
  10. Clean the LH upper corner of the backlight glass with IPA wipes.
  11. Position the anchor suction cup in the LH upper corner of the backlight glass.

    Place the anchor suction cup near the starting point of the handle tool.
  12. Secure the nylon cord to the anchor suction cup.
  13. Clean the interior side of the backlight glass with isopropyl alcohol, especially the four corners of the glass.
  14. Secure the interior side of the nylon cord to the Spider cutting tool.

    Note
    Follow the instructions on the Spider tool. Feed the line through the opening of the cutting tool and tie a knot to secure the line in place. If the spindle is not turned the proper direction, the cutting tool will be damaged.
  15. Secure the Spider cutting tool to the interior side of the backlight glass assembly.

    Note the orientation of the cutting line. Make sure the line wraps over the large pulley and holds a 90 degree angle.
  16. Secure the angle driver to the electric drill.
  17. Turn the spindle on the cutting tool with the drill to cut the urethane securing backlight glass to body.

    If needed, move the cutting tool to keep the nylon cord close to 90° angle.

    Use dashboard protector to protect the backlight glass heater connector.
  18. Remove the wire, anchor suction cup and cutting tool from the backlight glass.
  19. Manually close the liftgate.
  20. Attach suction cups to the LH and RH sides of the backlight glass.

    Clean the glass under the suction cups to improve performance of the suction cups.
  21. With an assistant, remove the backlight glass assembly from the vehicle.
  22. Remove and discard the datum pins (x2) from the liftgate.
  23. Remove the suction cups from backlight glass.
  24. Use a razor blade to carefully remove the old urethane from the liftgate.

    Make sure that the remaining adhesive is 1mm or less in thickness.
  25. Remove the masking tape from the liftgate.

Install

  1. With an assistant, place the new backlight glass on a support stand.
  2. Clean the urethane path on the backlight glass with IPA wipes.

    Allow 1 minute for the surface to dry before continuing to the next step.
  3. Apply urethane primer to the backlight glass along the urethane path.

    Allow the primer to dry for at least 2 minutes before continuing.

    If using Sika 258 sealant, please use Sika special activator pro as shown in the orange item in the picture.
  4. Clean the urethane path on the liftgate with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe. Allow the surface to dry before continuing to the next step.
  5. Apply urethane primer to the vehicle along the urethane path and in areas that were damaged during removal of the backlight glass.

    If using Sika 258 sealant, please use Sika special activator pro as shown in the orange item in the picture.
  6. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane by cutting the tip of the urethane cartridge in a triangular shape approximately 8 mm wide and 13 mm tall.
  7. Apply urethane to the backlight glass following the primer path.

    Fill in all gaps and smooth over any peaks in the urethane to ensure a consistent bead.
  8. Attach suction cups to the LH and RH sides of the backlight glass.

  9. With an assistant, install the backlight glass to the vehicle.
  10. Check the gap and flush of the backlight glass to the body before fully seating the backlight glass.

  11. Fully seat the backlight glass, check the gap and flush, and adjust as necessary.
  12. Clean any debris or visible urethane from the glass and the body with IPA and allow the surface to dry.
  13. Apply masking tape to attach the backlight glass to the body while the urethane cures.

    For urethane curing time, follow urethane manufacturer's recommendations.
  14. Remove the suction cups from the backlight glass.
  15. Open the liftgate.
  16. Connect the backlight glass heater ground strap connector, and then install the clip that attaches the connector to the body.
  17. Connect the backlight glass heater positive connector, and then install the clip that attaches the connector to the body.
  18. Install the lower liftgate trim. See Liftgate Lower Trim (Remove and Replace).
  19. Remove the masking tape after the urethane has cured.

    CAUTION
    Do not drive the vehicle until the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended minimum drive-away time has passed. Dow Betaseal Express has a drive-away time of 1 hour minimum in temperatures of 0˚F (-18˚C) or warmer. If necessary, leave the tape applying pressure to the glass on the vehicle and advise the customer that they can remove it after 24 hours. Additionally, advise the customer that they should avoid high driving speeds and speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
