Front Door Pinch Sensor Retrofit

When replacing a front door on a Model X equipped with pinch sensors, retrofit a pinch sensor on the new door to match the appearance of the remaining original front door.

Early Model X vehicles have pinch sensors installed on the front doors. The installation of pinch sensors has been discontinued in production and current firmware does not support pinch sensors on Model X front doors. The front doors on Model X vehicles built after October 17, 2018 no longer have the pinch sensors installed in the front doors. The doors that were originally installed on vehicles built through October 17, 2018 are no longer being produced and cannot be ordered.

If replacing one front door on a vehicle that had front door pinch sensors installed, retrofit the pinch sensor on the new door to match the appearance of the remaining original front door.

Note
If replacing both front doors on a vehicle that had front door pinch sensors installed, do not retrofit pinch sensors on either of the new front doors (front door pinch sensors are no longer supported in current firmware, so they are no longer used or required).

Identifying the Door Version

Front doors originally installed on vehicles built through October 17, 2018 differ from the front doors that come on vehicles built after October 17, 2018 in that the newer doors do not have pre-drilled holes for mounting pinch sensors (see the areas circled in red).

Retrofit Procedure

When replacing a front door on a Model X that has pinch sensors installed, pinch sensor mounting holes must be created in the new part so the pinch sensor can be installed.

  1. Cut off the pinch sensor wiring harness approximately 10 mm from the pinch sensor, and then seal all open wire ends.
  2. Place the pinch sensor against the door and secure it in place.
  3. Use the pinch sensor as a template to mark locations for mounting holes, as shown below.
  4. Remove the pinch sensor.
  5. Drill a 6.2 mm hole at each marked location.
  6. Clean and deburr the drilled holes.
  7. Refer to the Model X Service Manual procedure Pinch Sensor (1st row) - LH (Remove and Replace) (correction code 11351202) for information about installing the front door pinch sensor.
