Front Door and Front Door Latch Replacement

When replacing a 1st generation front door or door latch on a Model X, install 2nd generation parts because the 1st generation parts are no longer available.

The 1st generation front doors and front door latches that originally came on Model X built through May 8, 2017 are no longer being produced and cannot be ordered. When replacing a 1st generation front door or 1st generation front door latch, order and install the 2nd generation parts required by the repair situation (refer to the appropriate section below).

Identify the Door Version

Use the images below to identify the front door generation by the door latch opening and the mounting point locations for the door latch:

1st generation LH front door and door latch

2nd generation LH front door and door latch

Note
All Model X built after May 8, 2017 use 2nd generation front doors and 2nd generation front door latches (Figure 2).

Note
Updated front door latches will not work properly until the vehicle’s front door latch configuration has been changed. After performing the procedure, email BodyRepair@tesla.com (for North America) or EMEABodyRepair@tesla.com (for EMEA) with the VIN to get the vehicle’s configuration changed.

Identify the Door Latch Version

A 1st generation front door might have a 1st generation front door latch or might have been retrofitted with a 2nd generation front door latch. Identify the generation of the door latch by the fasteners that attach the latch to the door.

A 1st generation door with a 1st generation door latch has Torx-head bolts that attach the latch to the door.

A 1st generation door with a 2nd generation door latch has an adapter plate between the door panel and the latch to allow the 2nd generation door latch to be attached at the 1st generation door latch mounting points. The adapter plate has studs (highlighted in red) that protrude through the latch mounting holes and is attached with end cap nuts.

Figure 1. 1st generation LH front door and 1st generation door latch
Figure 2. 1st generation front door and 2nd generation door latch (adapter plate and studs highlighted)

Because the adapter plate shortens the effective length of the latch, a 1st generation front door with a 2nd generation latch uses a taller striker than the original shorter striker.

CAUTION
Attempting to close a front door with the wrong striker installed will damage the front door latch.

Note
All 2nd generation front doors use 2nd generation front door latches.

Note
A vehicle may not have a combination of 1st generation and 2nd generation front door latches. For example, if the left-hand front door has a 2nd generation door latch, the right-hand door must also have a 2nd generation door latch.

After determining the version of front door latches currently in the vehicle, use the information in the “Parts for Vehicles with 1st Generation Front Door Latches” or “Parts for Vehicles with 2nd Generation Front Door Latches” section of this document to determine the parts to order.

Parts for Vehicles with 1st Generation Front Door Latches

When replacing a 1st generation front door on a vehicle with 1st generation door latches, retrofit the opposite door with a 2nd generation front door latch (refer to the “Install a 2nd Generation Front Door Latch in a 1st Generation Front Door” section of this document for retrofit instructions). Refer to the appropriate table below for the parts to order, depending on the specific repair situation:

Note
2nd generation front door latches do not have a harness connector for the pinch sensors and the current firmware version does not support pinch sensors. Cut off the end of the pinch sensor harness during installation.
