Rear Wheel Arch

Using this Document

This document contains two major parts:
  1. Rear Wheel Arch Section Descriptions provide information on where and how to section the Rear Wheel Arch as necessary to replace damaged areas of the Rear Wheel Arch, or to gain access to underlying parts of the vehicle structure. Use the section descriptions to determine where to successfully section the Rear Wheel Arch as needed for the repair being performed.

    Note
    Measurements from bolt hole locations are from the center of the referenced holes unless stated differently in the section description.
  2. The Repair Procedure portion of this document contain the information necessary to replace the entire Rear Wheel Arch. If replacing a section of the Rear Wheel Arch (not the entire Rear Wheel Arch), use the relevant portions of each step to determine which parts and fasteners are needed and the steps required to complete the repair.

Alternatively, instead of replacing the complete Rear Wheel Arch, the rear section can be replaced using a portion of the Rear Wheel Arch service part using the cut lines described in this document.

  • A = 50 mm.
  • B = 45 mm.
  • C = 25 mm.

Note
Cut the new Rear Wheel Arch service part 25 mm. forward of the cut line on the vehicle to create the new component that has an overlap joint with the component still on the vehicle.

Cut notches as shown for the upper and lower butt joints and trim as needed to obtain good butt joints.

GMA Weld

Repair Procedure

  1. Remove the (or the Quarter Outer – Vehicles Built for China).
  2. Remove the original component.

  3. Prepare for installation.

    Note
    The following Tesla SPR die is required to install this SPR: SM 085 0125.
  4. Apply structural adhesive to the mating surfaces on the vehicle and the new component or components.
  5. Install the new component or components.
  6. If replacing a section of the Rear Wheel Arch: GMA weld the butt joints between the sections.

    Failure to follow all welding safety precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment, could result in serious injury or property damage. Only technicians who have completed Tesla’s approved welding training are authorized to weld structural components on Tesla vehicles.

    Warning
    To maintain vehicle crash integrity, use only approved welding wire and an approved GMA welder to perform GMA welding on Tesla vehicles. Refer to Approved Gas Metal Arc (GMA) Welders and Welding Wire for information on approved GMA welders and welding wire.

    CAUTION
    Do not weld on a Tesla vehicle before performing the Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure (refer to the vehicle-specific Service Manual for more information on the Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure). Welding on a Tesla vehicle with an energized high or low voltage system might damage vehicle components.

    Note
    Before GMA welding, a test weld using material of the same gauge and type should be performed to make sure that the welding equipment settings produce a satisfactory joint.
  7. If replacing a section of the Rear Wheel Arch: Grind the outer surface of the GMA weld flat to allow overlying components to fit flush..
  8. Install the (or the Quarter Outer – Vehicles Built for China).
  9. Perform any necessary post-repair operations.
