When ordering parts, refer to the Parts Catalog and enter the VIN of the vehicle being repaired to find the correct parts (and the part numbers) for the vehicle. Alternatively, use the search function in the Parts Catalog to find a specific part for the vehicle.

Repair Procedure

  1. Remove the necessary portion of the Body Side Outer to expose the underlying component being replaced.
  2. If necessary, remove other body panels for access.
  3. Remove the damaged area of the original component.

    Note
    Depending on the location of the repair area, the Rivnuts for the jack pads of the Sill may have to be removed in order to complete the repair.

    • A = Up to 250 mm.
    • B = 47 mm.
  4. Cut the new Sill Flange Repair Section to the length required for the repair to make the new component.

    Trim the new Sill Flange Repair Section as necessary to fit the repair area.
  5. Cut the new Sill Flange Repair Backing Plate service part 80 mm. longer than the replacement section to make the backing plate.

    Use the trimmed Sill Flange Repair Section as template for measurement.

  6. Prepare for installation.

    Depending on the location of the repair area, the Rivnuts for the jack pads of the Sill may have to be removed in order to install the Sill Flange Repair Backing Plate.

    Drill out any preexisting holes obstructed by the backing plate.

    Space fasteners approximately 35 mm. apart in the repair area.

    GMA Weld

  7. Apply structural adhesive to the mating surfaces on the vehicle and the new component or components.
  8. Install the backing plate.

    Drill out any preexisting holes obstructed by the backing plate.

    Install the backing plate from either end of the Side Sill.
  9. Install the new component or components.
  10. Perform GMA welding.

    To maintain vehicle crash integrity, use only approved welding wire and an approved GMA welder to perform GMA welding on Tesla vehicles. Refer to Approved Gas Metal Arc (GMA) Welders and Welding Wire for information on approved GMA welders and welding wire.

    CAUTION
    Do not weld on a Tesla vehicle before performing the Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure (refer to the vehicle-specific Service Manual for more information on the Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure). Welding on a Tesla vehicle with an energized high or low voltage system might damage vehicle components.

    Note
    Before GMA welding, a test weld using material of the same gauge and type should be performed to make sure that the welding equipment settings produce a satisfactory joint.
  11. Grind the GMA welds down until they are flush with the exterior of the surrounding panels.
  12. Install any Rivnuts that were removed in previous steps.

  13. Replace any other body panels that were removed to allow access to the repair area.
  14. Install the portion of the Body Side Outer that was removed to expose the component being replaced.
  15. Perform any necessary post-repair operations.
