Alternatively, instead of replacing the complete C-Pillar Reinforcement, the lower portion of the Quarter Outer Skin can be replaced using the cut line described in this document.

Repair Procedure

  1. Remove the Door Assembly - Rear - LH (Remove and Install).
  2. Remove the Bumper Assembly - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the Seal - Body - Side - Rear - Primary - LH (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the Body Glass - Rear Quarter - LH (Remove and Install).
  5. Remove the Fascia Assembly - Rear (Remove and Install).
  6. Remove the MS ASY BRKT,WING LH (see the Service Manual).
  7. Remove the Air Extractor - Outer - LH (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the Wheel Arch Liner - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove the Molding - Rocker Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  10. Remove the Seal - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  11. Remove the Pad - Lifting - Each (Remove and Replace).
  12. LH Component only: Remove the Strut - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  13. RH Component only: Remove the Power Strut - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  14. Remove the Taillight Assembly - LH (Remove and Replace).
  15. LH Component only: Remove the Door Assembly - Charge Port (China) (Remove and Replace).
  16. Remove unnecessary components from the service assembly.
  17. Separate the rear wheel arch flange.
  18. Remove the original component.
    Note
    If replacing only a section of the Rear Quarter Outer: Remove only the fasteners in the section being removed.

  19. Prepare for installation.
    Note
    A red X indicates a location where a factory-installed fastener is not being replaced. Secure this location using structural adhesive only.

  20. Apply structural adhesive to the mating surfaces on the vehicle and the new component or components.
  21. Install the new component or components.
  22. Fold over the wheel arch flange.
  23. If replacing a section of the Quarter Outer Skin: Perform GMA welding.

    GMA Weld

    Warning
    Failure to follow all welding safety precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment, could result in serious injury or property damage. Only technicians who have completed Tesla’s approved welding training are authorized to weld structural components on Tesla vehicles.
    Warning
    To maintain vehicle crash integrity, use only approved welding wire and an approved GMA welder to perform GMA welding on Tesla vehicles. Refer to Approved Gas Metal Arc (GMA) Welders and Welding Wire for information on approved GMA welders and welding wire.
    CAUTION
    Do not weld on a Tesla vehicle before performing the Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure (refer to the vehicle-specific Service Manual for more information on the Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure). Welding on a Tesla vehicle with an energized high or low voltage system might damage vehicle components.
    Note
    Before GMA welding, a test weld using material of the same gauge and type should be performed to make sure that the welding equipment settings produce a satisfactory joint.
  24. Install Instapaks.
    Install an Instapak into the cavity between the Quarter Outer Skin and the C-Pillar Reinforcement.
  25. Perform any necessary post-repair operations.
  26. LH Component only: Install the Door Assembly - Charge Port (China) (Remove and Replace).
  27. Install the Taillight Assembly - LH (Remove and Replace).
  28. RH Component only: Install the Power Strut - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  29. LH Component only: Install the Strut - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  30. Install the Pad - Lifting - Each (Remove and Replace).
  31. Install the Seal - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  32. Install the Molding - Rocker Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  33. Install the Wheel Arch Liner - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  34. Install the Air Extractor - Outer - LH (Remove and Replace).
  35. Install the MS ASY BRKT,WING LH (see the Service Manual).
  36. Install the Fascia Assembly - Rear (Remove and Install).
  37. Install the Body Glass - Rear Quarter - LH (Remove and Install).
