Repair Procedure

  1. Remove the lower section of the Quarter Outer Complete or the Quarter Outer Skin – China Charge Port Vehicles.
  2. Remove the original component.

  3. Check the fit of the new Wheelhouse Extension component.
    If needed:
    • Trim the inboard edge of the component as necessary to fit.
    • Heat and then smooth out the angled portion of the Rear Wheelhouse Extension to fit the Rear Node (the Rear Wheelhouse Extension is shown separately in the image for clarity).
  4. Prepare for installation.

    GMA Weld

    Note
    If GMA welds were originally used, do not drill holes for structural rivets. This area will be secured with GMA welds. If GMA welds were not used in this location then install rivets in this location. GMA welds in this location will not need to be added.
  5. Apply structural adhesive to the mating surfaces on the vehicle and the new component or components.
  6. Perform GMA welding.

    To maintain vehicle crash integrity, use only approved welding wire and an approved GMA welder to perform GMA welding on Tesla vehicles. Refer to Approved Gas Metal Arc (GMA) Welders and Welding Wire for information on approved GMA welders and welding wire.

    CAUTION
    Do not weld on a Tesla vehicle before performing the Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure (refer to the vehicle-specific Service Manual for more information on the Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure). Welding on a Tesla vehicle with an energized high or low voltage system might damage vehicle components.

    Note
    Before GMA welding, a test weld using material of the same gauge and type should be performed to make sure that the welding equipment settings produce a satisfactory joint.
  7. Install the new component or components.
  8. Install the lower section of the Quarter Outer Complete or the Quarter Outer Skin – China Charge Port Vehicles that was removed to expose the component being replaced.
  9. Perform any necessary post-repair operations.
