Powertrain Coolant (Drain and Refill)

Drain
- Enable Service Mode. See Service Mode.

Perform the following
routine using Service Mode or Toolbox (see 0005 - Service Modes):

- Thermal ➜ Coolant System ➜ Start Coolant Fill/Drain
- Thermal ➜ Refrigerant System ➜ Start Refrigerant Fill/Drain
- Drive Unit ➜ Front Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Start Coolant Fill/Drain
- Drive Unit ➜ Rear Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Start Coolant Fill/Drain
- Disconnect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).

Remove the lower clips (x3)
and bolt (x1) that attach the lower rear edge of the RH wheel arch liner to
the body, to allow access to the coolant hose.
NotePut the RH front wheel liner away from the HV battery, using a bungee cord.
- Position a coolant drain container under the front RH corner of the HV battery.

Disconnect the powertrain
return hose at the RH side of the vehicle.
NotePlug the coolant connections.

Attach the PT drain fitting adapter to the male PT return hose, and direct
the tube to the coolant drain.

Disconnect the rear
powertrain supply hose at the RH side of the vehicle.
NotePlug the coolant connections.

Connect the coolant pressure
test adapter to the female fitting of the PT supply hose.
NotePerform a push-pull test to make sure that the adapter is fully seated.

Connect the PT drain fitting
adapter to the coolant pressure tester cart.
NoteThe regulator valve is pre-set to 20 psi. When the valve is set to the horizontal position, it is fully closed. Make sure that the valve is in the closed position.

Connect a compressed air
supply line to the coolant pressure tester.

Open the valve on the PT
drain fitting adapter.
NoteWhen the valve knob is in the horizontal position, it is fully open.

Slowly open P2 (outlet
valve) on the pressure regulator, and allow the coolant to drain.
NoteOpen the valve very slowly. If it is opened too quickly, the pressure relief valve on the superbottle cap may open. Also the superbottle cap may make a humming noise. If so, the pressure is too high and should be lowered by adjusting the valve.
- Wait until the coolant is fully drained.

Close the P2 (outlet valve)
on the pressure regulator.
- Disconnect the air supply from the test fixture.
- Remove the coolant pressure test adapter and coolant drain adapter from the hoses.
- Perform the service procedures that required the powertrain coolant to be drained.
- After the components have been replaced, refill the coolant. See Refill.
Refill
- Remove the rubber plugs from the hoses.

Connect the powertrain supply hose to the male fitting.
CAUTIONPerform a push-pull test to verify that the hose is fully seated.

Connect the powertrain return hose to the female fitting.
CAUTIONPerform a push-pull test to verify that the hose is fully seated.

Install the lower clips (x3)
and bolt (x1) that attach the lower rear edge of the RH wheel arch liner to
the body.

- Perform a vacuum refill of the cooling system. See Cooling System (Vacuum Refill).
