Rim - Steering Wheel (Remove and Replace)

Torque Specifications

Remove

  1. Disconnect LV power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  2. Remove the driver airbag. See GUID-091C66CC-E2B0-48D8-A698-207C42F2F5DC.html#GUID-091C66CC-E2B0-48D8-A698-207C42F2F5DC.
  3. Disconnect the steering wheel electrical wiring harness connector.
  4. Release the horn assembly to gain access to the lower connector.
    Note
    Pull the horn assembly straight out to release the clips (x3).
  5. Disconnect the steering wheel heating element connector.
  6. Remove the bolts (x4) that attach the bright surround to the steering wheel, and then release the bright surround and switches assembly from the steering wheel.
    Note
    Pry the lower portion of the bright surround assembly away from the steering wheel, and then work your way around.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T20 bit
  7. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the steering wheel to the steering column.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  8. If the new steering wheel rim comes without an airbag retention wire: Squeeze the wire towards the middle and remove the airbag retention wire upwards for reuse.
  9. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column.

Install

  1. Align the keyed parts of steering wheel and column.
  2. Install a new bolt that attaches the steering wheel to the steering column.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  3. If the new steering wheel rim comes without an airbag retention wire, install the wire removed from the old rim to the new rim.
  4. Install the bolts (x4) that attach the bright surround to the steering wheel.
    2.5 Nm (1.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T20 bit
  5. Connect the steering wheel heating element connector.
  6. Install the horn assembly.
  7. Connect the steering wheel electrical wiring harness connector.
  8. Install the driver airbag. See GUID-091C66CC-E2B0-48D8-A698-207C42F2F5DC.html#GUID-091C66CC-E2B0-48D8-A698-207C42F2F5DC.
  9. Connect LV power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
