Glass - Roof - Fixed (Remove and Install)

  • 1083427-00-A - EHL187 EXPRESS BLADE
  • 1082477-03-A - Needle Nose Pliers

CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.

Remove

  1. Open all the doors and lower all the windows.
  2. Open the liftgate.
  3. Apply masking tape to protect the paint on the vehicle.
  4. Install the headliner protector between the headliner and the fixed glass above the driver rear seat.
  5. Use equalizer to separate the datums (x2) from the roof glass.

    Note
    Slide the equalizer up against the datums and carefully separate adhesive from the windshield. Note you may not be able to see the datum clearly but you can feel for it using the blade. Release the datum as it will aid in the cutting process.
  6. Secure the line to the starter tool and push the tool through the urethane at the LH rear corner of the fixed roof glass assembly.

    CAUTION
    Be careful not to damage the headliner assembly and exterior paint.
  7. Pull the nylon string through.

    Note
    Make sure to pull enough string through to wrap around the circumference of the glass.
  8. Route the nylon string around the glass, lifting and placing under the seals.

    CAUTION
    Be careful not to damage the seal for windshield during routing.
  9. Insert the nylon string back though the wire starter, and then retract back into the vehicle.
  10. Remove the nylon string from the starter tool.
  11. Attach the cutting tools to the fixed glass, and then pump the cutting tool to secure it to the glass.

    Make sure the suction is sufficient by checking the red ring is no longer visible.
  12. Use one end of the nylon as an anchor point in the vehicle using the suction cup.
  13. Route nylon through the cutting tool and turn to take up the slack in the nylon.
  14. Install an angle driver to an electric drill and set the drill clutch to 1.

    Failure to set the drill clutch to 1 may result in serious injury.
  15. Use the drill to turn the spindle on the cutting tool. Begin cutting urethane around the glass.

    Do not begin cutting the windshield without first setting the drill clutch to 1. Failure to do so may result in serious injury.

    Wear appropriate eye and hand protection while cutting the glass assembly.

    CAUTION
    Place a plastic guard to protect the headliner assembly.

    CAUTION
    Take precaution to make sure the line goes above the datums and the roof brackets. If the line gets caught on the roof bracket then the line will break.

    TIp
    Use the headliner protector or a trim tool to apply upward pressure to the line as it cuts. Do not use your hands.

    Move the cutting tool as needed while keeping the line close to a 90° angle. If the line gets stuck, try to pull it backwards in order release it from under the metal roof bracket or change the positions of the anchor and cutting tool.

  16. Remove the cutting tools from the glass.
  17. With assistance, attach suction cups (x4) to each corner of the fixed roof glass.
  18. With an assistant, remove the fixed roof glass from the vehicle.

    Discard the glass per local regulations.
  19. Use a scraper to remove old urethane from the body, and then wipe the body to clean the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol wipes.

    Make sure the remaining urethane is 1 mm or less in thickness.

    Make sure to wear proper PPE, including cut-resistant gloves, during this step.
  20. Remove any broken datums and replace any damaged body plugs.
  21. Verify that the roof glass is not damaged.

    Replace the glass if there is any damage which cannot be rectified. Damage includes cracked glass, chipper or mutilated glass edges.
  22. Remove the front and rear datums from the roof glass.
  23. Remove the net pads (x10) from the roof glass.
  24. Use a scraper to remove old urethane from the roof glass.

    Make sure the remaining urethane is 1 mm or less in thickness.

    Sharpen the scraper to restore the cutting edge if needed.

  25. Use a scraper to remove the front and rear seals from the roof glass.
  26. Use eraser wheel and scraper tool to remove the adhesive residue from the roof glass, and then wipe the glass to clean the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol wipes.

    Allow 1 minute of dry time.
  27. Apply 3M adhesive promoter to the roof glass edges.

    Allow 60 to 90 seconds of dry time.

Install

  1. Install new rear seal (1531350-00-A) onto the roof glass.

    The seal should remain outside of the white dotted line on the glass.
  2. Install new front seal (1531353-00-A) onto the roof glass.

    Align the center pad on the seal with the lines on the glass.

    The seal should remain outside of the white dotted line on the glass.
  3. Install new side net pads (x6) (1521164-00-A) on LH and RH sides of the roof glass.

    3 pads on the left side and 3 pads on the right side of the glass.

    Place the pads inside of the while lines.
  4. Install new side net pads (x4) (1509218-00-A) on rear side of the roof glass.

  5. Install new rear location pin(1509215-00-A) on the front of the roof glass.

    The pin has a locating feature. Align the tab with the bump in the white line.
  6. Install new rear location pin(1509215-00-A) on the rear of the roof glass.

  7. Attach suction cups (x4) to each corner of the new fixed roof glass.
  8. Clean the roof glass mounting surface on the vehicle with an isopropyl alcohol wipes.

    Allow 1 minute of dry time.
  9. Apply urethane primer to the vehicle body and the roof glass along the urethane path and in areas that were damaged during removal of the fixed roof glass.

    Primer should go around the inside of the roof bracket.

    Allow the primer to dry for at least 2 minute.
  10. Apply urethane to the body following the original path.

    Make sure that the urethane bead has a triangular cross-section of approximate width 12 mm and height 20 mm.

    Urethane should go around the inside of the roof bracket.
  11. With assistance, place the roof glass onto the vehicle, but do not set it yet.

    Align the datums centered at the front and rear of the glass to the body.
  12. Position the new seal at the front of the glass beneath the windshield seal.

    Use a trim tool to properly seat the roof glass seal under the windshield seal.
  13. Check that gap and flushness is within specification and adjust if necessary.
  14. Press the glass onto the body once it is in position.

    Use sandbags for the front if needed.
  15. Remove the suction cups from the roof glass.
  16. Remove the tape from the body surrounding the roof glass.
  17. Clean the glass.
  18. Apply painter's tape to the glass to secure it into position.

    Warning
    Do not drive the vehicle until the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended minimum drive-away time has passed. If necessary, leave the tape applying pressure to the glass on the vehicle and advise the customer that they can remove it after 24 hours. Additionally, advise the customer that they should avoid high driving speeds and speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
  19. Raise all the windows and close all the doors.
  20. Close the liftgate.
