Installing Roof Racks

You can purchase roof racks for your vehicle from the Tesla shop (https://shop.tesla.com/ or https://shop.tesla.cn/ for China) to carry items such as surf boards or kayaks on the roof of your vehicle. To install the roof racks:

  1. Thoroughly clean the vehicle’s rooftop around the location of the arrows on the glass and allow to dry.
  2. Use the arrow icon on top of the footpads to identify which corner of the vehicle that the pad and matching anti-abrasian tape should be applied to.
  3. Measure 18 mm from the front edge of the front left side glass top. Align the arrow on the glass with the arrow on the anti-abrasion tape, then apply the anti-abrasion tape to the vehicle, following the trim line. Repeat this step on the front right side.
  4. Measure 42 mm from the rear edge rear left side of the glass top. Align the arrow on the glass with the arrow on the anti-abrasion tape, then apply the anti-abrasion tape to the vehicle, following the trim line. Repeat this step on the rear right side.
  5. Use a clip tool to carefully retract the rubber seal at the arrow location.
  6. Keeping the clip tool in place, insert a rail clip at the arrow location.
  7. Remove the clip tool, ensuring the clip is engaged in the metal receiver under the glass. Pull up and wiggle to be sure it’s properly engaged. Be sure the center of hook aligns with the arrow. Repeat this process on the remaining corners of the vehicle.
  8. Place the front left-hand side pad over the clip on the front driver side. Use the icon to help identify and install the correct pad in the proper location. Repeat this process to install the remaining pads on the vehicle.
  9. To install the crossbars: ensure all four hooks are engaged, properly aligned, and in the upright position. Then, carefully place the front and rear crossbars over the pads.

The front crossbar is longer than the rear crossbar.
  10. Install the wingnuts and hand tighten onto each of the towers.
  11. Tighten the wingnuts with the hex wrench until the tower is firmly fixated to the vehicle. We recommend tightening to 2.5-3.5 Nm. To confirm the tower is properly, installed, pull in all directions and ensure there’s no movement. In order to lock the system, the mark on the wingnut must align with the mark on the tower.
