Solar Production Stops During Backup Test

Symptoms

When the backup test is performed, Powerwall supplies the loads but the solar inverter stops producing power.

Steps to Troubleshoot

  1. Check the State of Energy (SOE). If it is close to 100%, Powerwall will trigger solar production to shut off by frequency shifting to avoid damaging Powerwall. This is expected Powerwall behavior. Wait for SOE to drop by 10%, then retry the backup test if the issue persists.
  2. Ensure solar production does not exceed the available charge rate of Powerwall. See the Powerwall Installation Design Guidelines for system sizing examples. If solar is in excess of 5 kW per Powerwall on site (which can cause frequency shifting), reduce solar production for off-grid testing:
    • For sites with multiple solar inverters, turn all but one solar inverter off.
    • For sites with only one solar inverter, unplug one or more strings at the inverter.
  3. If the Powerwall has a low temperature (for instance, it was stored in a cold place immediately prior to installation):
    • Leave solar on and return by mid-day the following day to perform off-grid testing.
    • Leave solar on and wait for inspection to perform off-grid testing (if unable to return the following day).
