Wheelhouse Outer (Rear)

Correction code: 10101916002 10101917202 NOTE: Unless explicitly stated in the procedure, the above correction code includes all Collision Repair and Service repair work required to perform this procedure, including the linked Collision Repair procedures and linked Service procedures. Do not stack Collision Repair correction codes unless explicitly told to do so. Depending on the damage to the vehicle, additional repairs may be required.

Repair Information

  • Review all collision repair general practices and safety documentation and wear the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) before beginning this procedure.
  • This procedure can be completed without using a frame bench.
  • Replaced in a single repair as a single complete component, using the ASSEMBLY,WHEEL HOUSE OUTER,SVC E-COATED (Wheelhouse Outer) service part and the instructions in the Repair Procedure section of this document.
  • Any individual section of the Wheelhouse Outer can be replaced so long as the guidelines from the Sectioning Guidelines are followed.

High Strength Structural Rivet, 6.5 mm

Sectioning Guidelines

General sectioning guidelines:
  • It is allowable to cut through a clearance hole or a non functional hole (exterior trim hole).
  • Do not cut within 25 mm of the center of a bolt hole or stud.
  • Seal all open seams after structural adhesive has cured.
  • Sections do not require fasteners at butt joints unless specifically indicated.
  • A backing plate may be installed at a butt joint between sections (as described in create and install backing plates).
  • GMA weld section butt joints.
  • If a butt joint includes a flange, do not weld on the flange (flanges are secured using only structural adhesive).

The image below shows the Wheelhouse Outer (complete). The colored areas indicate if sectioning is allowed. Compare the damaged area of the vehicle's Wheelhouse Outer to the image below, then use the repair criteria corresponding to the color of the highlighted area to find the criteria to use to determine if the damaged area of the component can be sectioned.

Wheelhouse Outer Sectioning

Based on the colors used in the image above, the allowed repairs are as follows:

Green areas: Sectioning is allowed in these areas.

Overlap joints must have at least a 25 mm of overlap that is secured with structural adhesive. When using an overlap joint between a red zone area and a green zone area, the red zone area must overlap into the green zone area 25 mm or more (do not overlap into the red zone).

Note
The gap between the adjacent panels of the butt joint for this section should be as small as possible to maximize joint strength.
Note
Seal all open seams after welding.
Yellow areas: Sectioning is allowed in these areas.
Note
Sectioning in these areas requires the component be returned to its original geometry for proper function.

Overlap joints must have at least a 25 mm of overlap that is secured with structural adhesive. When using an overlap joint between a red zone area and a yellow zone area, the red zone area must overlap into the yellow zone area 25 mm or more (do not overlap into the red zone).

Areas shown in yellow include areas that:

  • Allow water ingress, so use special care to make sure that seals fit correctly in all repaired areas.
    Note
    Once the repair is complete, make sure that all seals fit properly and make sure that water does not ingress in the repair area.
  • Other components may mount to the Wheelhouse Outer in thie area. Use special care to make sure that openings in repair area are the same size as the original openings, and ensure that mounting areas allow components to fit properly.
    Note
    Once the repair is complete, make sure that mounted compnents are flush with the Body Side Outer surface and that the components fit correctly in all repaired areas.
Red areas: Sectioning is not allowed.

Note
Install the new section under the original component, with a 25 mm overlap.
Note
Install fasteners evenly on the overlap area of the panels, and make sure that the rivet pitch tolerance is between 240 - 260 mm.
Note
Install seam sealer as indicated.

ASSEMBLY - WHEEL HOUSE OUTER

Structural Bulb Rivet, 6.5 mm (x4)

Repair Procedure

  1. LH Component only: Remove the WheelHouse Insulator - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  2. RH Component only: Remove the WheelHouse Insulator - Rear - RH (Remove and Replace).
  3. Loosen the indicated components that secure the Body Harness to the Wheelhouse Outer.
  4. Loosen the indicated components that secure the Body Harness to the Wheelhouse Outer.
  5. Loosen the indicated components that secure the Body Harness to the Wheelhouse Outer.
  6. Remove the necessary portion of the Dogleg Lower to expose the underlying component being replaced.
  7. Remove the Rear Quarter Outer to expose the underlying component being replaced.
  8. Remove the original component.
    • or Drill through factory spot welds
    Note
    Unfold the tab in the area circled in red to allow space to remove the drill through spot welds.
    Note
    When drilling out spot welds, use a drill bit that creates a hole correctly sized for the fastener that will replace the spot weld.

  9. Prepare for installation.
    Note
    RH component only: Replace NVH foam if damaged or when performing repairs in the area.
  10. Prepare for installation.
  11. Apply structural adhesive to the mating surfaces on the vehicle and the new component or components.
  12. Install the new component or components.
  13. Fold the indicated flap to cover the flange of the Wheelhouse Outer Rear.
  14. Install the Rear Quarter Outer.
  15. Install the fasteners as indicated.
  16. Perform any necessary post-repair operations.
  17. Attach the indicated components to secure the Body Harness to the Wheelhouse Outer.
  18. Attach the indicated components to secure the Body Harness to the Wheelhouse Outer.
  19. Attach the indicated components to secure the Body Harness to the Wheelhouse Outer.
  20. Install the necessary portion of the Dogleg Lower that was removed to expose the component being replaced.
  21. RH Component only: Install the WheelHouse Insulator - Rear - RH (Remove and Replace).
  22. LH Component only: Install the WheelHouse Insulator - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
