Install the Backup Switch

Applying oxide-inhibiting electrical joint compound to all four meter socket jaws is recommended prior to installing the Backup Switch. Follow the manufacturer's guidance when applying.

Even though circuits have been turned off and are not under load, conductors may still be live. Wear all electrical PPE as defined in Required Tools.
  1. Align the Backup Switch with the meter socket and, using a rocking motion, plug it into place.

    The Backup Switch must be fully inserted to ensure the system is grounded.

  2. For ring type meter sockets: Install the sealing ring to secure the Backup Switch to the meter socket.

    Note
    Ensure the sealing ring is oriented such that the FRONT arrow etched into the ring faces toward the meter, and not the panel. The front wall of the sealing ring is shallower than the rear wall to match the profile of the Backup Switch; thus, the sealing ring cannot be installed if it is not oriented correctly.

    Note
    Tesla recommends installing a cable tie or similar locking means on the sealing ring(s) to discourage tampering with Backup Switch.
  3. For ringless meter sockets: Install the meter socket cover.
