Control Arm - Upper - Front - LH (2nd Generation) (RHD) (Dual Motor) (Remove and Replace)

Removal

  1. Prepare the vehicle for lifting. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.

    Put the vehicle into Jack Mode, however do not raise the vehicle at this time.
  2. Open the LH front door.
  3. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  4. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
  5. To enable TAS service mode, in Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "TAS service mode" into the search field, click PROC_TAS_X_ENTER-SERVICE-MODEvia Toolbox: (link), click Run, and allow the routine to complete.

    Note
    The drive rails must be on to enable this function.
  6. Raise the vehicle to unload the suspension.
  7. To deflate the front left air spring, in Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "TAS deflate front left" into the search field, click PROC_TAS_X_DEFLATEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Chassis ➜ Suspension ➜ Deflate, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  8. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  9. Release the push clips (x4) that attach the shock tower cover to the shock tower, and then remove the cover.
  10. Remove the LH front wheel arch liner. See Wheel Arch Liner - Front - LH (Remove and Replace).
  11. Remove the nut (torque 7 Nm) that attaches the front ride height sensor to the front upper control arm.
    Tip: Use a 9 mm wrench to hold the ball joint pin while loosening or tightening the lock nut.
  12. Remove the bolt (7 Nm) that attaches the jounce hose bracket to air spring module.
  13. Remove the nut and bolt (torque 140 Nm) that attach the front air spring module to the front lower aft link assembly.
  14. Release the grommet from the bracket that attaches the wheel speed sensor to the front knuckle.
  15. Release the clip that attaches the front wheel speed sensor to front knuckle.
  16. Remove the nut (torque 60 Nm) that attaches the knuckle to the upper control arm ball joint.

    Note
    Hold the bolt in place to prevent turning while removing the nut. Discard the nut after removal.
  17. Disconnect the upper control arm from the knuckle.
  18. Lower the vehicle to a comfortable working height.
  19. Release the air line fitting from the LH air spring module

    Note
    Once air leak can be heard, stop turning until all air is released.
  20. Remove the compression fitting from the air line.

    Note
    Slide the threaded section back, slide off the compression sleeve, and then slide the threaded section off the air line. Discard the compression fitting after removal.
  21. Remove the nuts (x3) that attach the LH front air spring module to the vehicle (torque 39 Nm).

    Use one hand to hold the air spring module before completely removing the last nut.
  22. Remove the air spring module.

    Push the air spring module up to release it from the lower arm, then route the air spring module between the lower arm and the jounce hose.
  23. Set the vehicle to a comfortable working height.
  24. Remove the bolts (x2) and nut that attach the LH front upper control arm to the body (torque 68 Nm).

    Note
    Discard the nyloc nut after removal.
  25. Remove the front LH upper control from the vehicle.

Installation

  1. Install the bolts (x2) and the new nyloc nut that attach the LH front upper control arm to the vehicle but do not fully torque them yet.

    The bolts and nut are torqued at a later step.
  2. Install the ride height tool onto the upper control arm and body.
  3. Torque both upper control arm bolts and the new nyloc nut (torque 68 Nm).
  4. Remove the ride height tool from the upper control arm.
  5. Lower the vehicle to a comfortable working height.
  6. Install the LH front air spring module.

    Note
    Route the air spring module between the lower control arm and the jounce hose, then align the air spring module fork around the lower control arm. Checking the top mount alignment is easier by looking at it from the forward section of the wheel arch area.
  7. Install the nuts (x3) that attach the air spring module to the vehicle (torque 39 Nm).
  8. Install a new air line fitting onto the air spring module (torque 2 Nm).
  9. Remove the plastic plug and install the air line into the fitting, and then press the hose into the fitting until the mark on the line aligns with the top of the fitting.

    Do a push-pull test to make sure that the air line is properly seated.
  10. Set the vehicle to a comfortable working height.
  11. Install a new patch nut to attach the upper control arm ball joint to the LH front knuckle assembly (torque 60 Nm).
  12. Install the grommet that attaches the LH speed sensor harness to the knuckle.
  13. Install the speed sensor harness clip to the knuckle.
  14. Install the bolt and nut that attach the LH front strut to the front lower aft link. Do not fully torque the bolt and nut at this stage.

  15. Install the bolt that attaches the jounce hose bracket to front air spring module (torque 7 Nm)
  16. Install the nut that secures the front LH ride height sensor (torque 7 Nm).
    Tip: Use a 9 mm wrench to hold the ball joint pin while tightening the lock nut.
  17. Install the LH front wheel arch liner. See Wheel Arch Liner - Front - LH (Remove and Replace).
  18. Install the LH front wheel. See Wheel (Remove and Replace).
  19. Remove the cap from the valve on the air suspension reservoir.
  20. Connect a Nitrogen cylinder hose adapter to the air suspension reservoir.
  21. Open the valve on the nitrogen cylinder and set the pressure to 8 bar (120 psi).
  22. Open the valve on the hose adapter to fill the reservoir.
  23. If necessary, re-connect the laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  24. If necessary, unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.

    Make sure the drive rails are on.
  25. In Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "Air-Suspension-Pressure" into the search field, click PROC_TAS_X_MEASURE-AIR-SUSPENSION-PRESSUREvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Chassis ➜ Suspension ➜ Measure Pressure, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.

    Note
    Make sure that the pressure displayed is between 8 and 10 bar (120 - 150 psi). If necessary, use the pressure regulator on the nitrogen cylinder to adjust the pressure.
  26. To inflate the front left air spring, in Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "TAS inflate front left" into the search field, click PROC_TAS_X_ASSISTED-INFLATEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Chassis ➜ Suspension ➜ Inflate, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  27. Close the main valve on the Nitrogen cylinder.
  28. Close the valve on the fill reservoir hose adapter.
  29. Close the pressure regulator valve on the Nitrogen cylinder.
  30. Disconnect the nitrogen cylinder hose from the air suspension reservoir.
  31. Install the cap onto the reservoir valve.
  32. In Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "Normal-Mode" into the search field, click PROC_TAS_X_ENTER-NORMAL-MODEvia Toolbox: (link), click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  33. Once all Toolbox 3 routines have been completed, disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  34. Install the LH shock tower cover.
  35. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  36. Install the HEPA filter outlet duct.
  37. Install the HEPA filter inlet duct.
  38. Install the push clips (x3) that attach the HEPA filter inlet duct to the cowl panel.
  39. Attach the RH and LH drainage hoses to the HEPA filter inlet duct.
  40. Install the front underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Front (Remove and Replace).
  41. Install the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace).
  42. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  43. Close the hood.
  44. Remove the vehicle from the lift and deactivate Jack Mode.
  45. Make sure that the air suspension functions correctly:
    1. Close all doors.
    2. On the touchscreen, select Controls > Suspension > Low and then select Very High.
    3. Set suspension back to Standard after verification of correct operation.
  46. Torque the nut and bolt (torque 140 Nm) that attach the front air spring module to the front lower aft link assembly.
  47. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
  48. Perform a test drive.
