Hose - Outlet - Rear Drive Unit (3DU) (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Open the LH front door.
  3. Lower all four windows
  4. Open the hood.
  5. Power off the vehicle using the touchscreen.
  6. Remove the rear apron.
  7. Remove HEPA filter assembly

    2x bolts, 10mm, 5 Nm, Pivot rearward edge up and past brake reservoir, Then lift up to clear frunk assembly
  8. Remove HEPA duct

    1x bolt, 10mm, 4 Nm, 1x datum, 2x ears, Release datum then release ears from bulkhead studs
  9. Disconnect the 12V negative battery cable and First Responder Loop.
  10. Remove RH rear wheel cap

    1x cap, Use both hands to gently pull the wheel cap to release the clips, Wheels may be equipped with center caps
  11. Loosen RH rear wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  12. Partially raise the vehicle, and then lower the lift onto the locks.
  13. Remove RH rear wheel

  14. Remove top clip securing outlet hose to RDU

  15. Fully raise the vehicle, and then lower the lift onto the locks.
  16. Remove mid aero shield

    11x bolts, 10mm, 5 Nm, Fasteners may vary, MYSP will have one less bolt
  17. Remove both LH and RH push clips securing mid aero shield to wheel house liner

  18. Release clip securing coolant hose to RH shear plate

  19. Release RH side hose clips from rear battery skid plate

  20. Remove front clips securing outlet hose to RDU

  21. Position coolant drain underneath RH rear of HV battery
  22. Remove clips securing RH rear wheel liner to rocker panel

  23. Disconnect coolant outlet hose to rear PT return hose and plug hoses

    1x spring clip, 2x plugs, Use shop towel to clean any residue coolant inside RH rocker panel if necessary
  24. Remove clip securing outlet hose to RDU heat exchanger

  25. Release coolant outlet hose from RDU heat exchanger

  26. Remove RDU outlet hose from RDU assembly

    Gently wiggle hose out from the subframe

Install

  1. Install RDU outlet hose to RDU assembly

    Gently install the hose to the subframe,Pay attention to protecting the hose during installation
  2. Secure coolant outlet hose onto RDU heat exchanger

    1x spring clip, Perform push-pull-push test to make sure hose is fully seated, Remove any plugs
  3. Install clip securing outlet hose to RDU heat exchanger

  4. Remove hose plugs and connect coolant outlet hose to rear PT return hose

    1x spring clip, Perform push-pull-push test to make sure hose is fully seated, Use shop towel to clean any coolant residue if necessary.Loss of coolant greater than 1L requires coolant vacuum fill
  5. Install clips securing RH rear wheel liner to rocker panel

  7. Install RH side hose clips to rear battery skid plate

  9. Apply Loctite 222 onto mid aero shield bolts and install mid aero shield

    11x bolts, 10mm, 5 Nm, Fasteners may vary, Model Y Structural Pack has one less bolt and one extra clip
  10. Install both LH and RH push clips securing mid aero shield to wheel house liner

  11. Remove coolant drain container from underneath vehicle
  12. Lower vehicle partially and set onto locks

    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered, Set vehicle to comfortable working height
  13. Install top clip securing outlet hose to RDU

  14. Install RH rear wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm, Start lug nuts by hand before using power tool
  15. Lower vehicle until tires are touching ground

    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered
  16. Torque RH rear wheel

  17. Install RH rear wheel cap

    1x cap, Align valve stem with wheel cap cavity
  18. Remove coolant bottle cap
  19. Inspect coolant level and top off as necessary

    Ensure coolant is filled using G-48 coolant
  20. Connect the First Responder Loop and 12V negative battery cable.
  21. Access thermal system routines via UI

    Select quick controls > Service mode > Thermal
  22. Run ODIN routine TEST_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-COOLANT-AIR-PURGEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode:

    • Thermal ➜ Coolant System ➜ Coolant Purge Start
    via Service Mode Plus:
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Front Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Left Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Right Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge

  23. Inspect coolant level and top off as necessary

  26. Install HEPA filter assembly

    2x bolts, 10mm, 5 Nm, Pivot forward edge down past frunk assembly, Then carefully move rear edge past brake reservoir and into position, Gently press on RH side of filter to seat seal onto duct, Rework requires new bolts
  27. Install the rear apron.
  28. Close the hood.
  29. Raise all four windows
  30. Close the LH front door.
  31. Remove vehicle from lift
